Texts start with 4, 5, or 6 digit number. Arbitrary?

When I look at my texts, a lot of them start off with, have as a header,
a phone number, and some have names of people I know, but others have a
4, 5, or 6 digit number that seems arbitrary.
What are those numbers? If they text me again in a year, will the
number be the same? If they text me again and the number is the same,
will all the previous texts from that number be displayed above the last
one? (If so, I may have deleted something by mistake.)
