• Will blocking notifications block all of them f rom a company?

From micky@21:1/5 to All on Wed Apr 23 22:03:52 2025
I looked at Instacart's app and checked with restaurants near me would
deliver through them, then today I got a notification from them.

I hate notifications. They take my attention and waste my time.

But if I turn them off, block them in settings, in general, will that
stop nofiications when I actually do business with, for example,
insstacart? If I order a delivery, when they text me about
substitutions or when/if it will be delivered, is that going to be
turned off too, or only the annoying notifications.

Hold the app's icon down for a few seconds until a small menu pops up. Tick
the "i". That should take you to an app info screen. Notifications should
be near the top. Tick that and turn off the switch. That should turn off
    notifications for that app only.

So far it's been a neat toy...

I understand that it would be that app only, but would it be the
annoying notifications only, or would it be t he ones they send when my
grocery order may require substitutions, and when it is ready for
pickup. When you turn off notifications does that include texts related
    to future current transactions?

I understand that it would be that app only, but would it be the
    annoying notifications only,

It would be ALL notifications for that ONE app. But since the above process
only takes seconds and if the notifications really do annoy you that much
then I would suggest that you turn them off and then when you want to use
that app and need its notification just turn them back on. If you only use
the app say once a month then it might be worth it. But if you used it say
every few days then the on/off routine would be also very annoying IMO,
    YMMV...

grocery order may require substitutions, and when it is ready for

The above process only turns off notifications for the annoying app, not
    texts.

Somewhere I have seen a list of notification types for one app, and you

Many apps allow you to select *within the app* which types of notifications they'll show you. eg you can opt out of promotions but still be notified of deliveries.

Then in the system settings for each app you can block all notifications, or there are settings for each class of notifications the app chooses to offer.
eg in the ebay app there are categories for 'general notifications', 'recommendations and rewards', 'shopping updates', etc. For each one you
can change the behaviour - eg you could have it make a different sound for 'selling notifications' and have 'rewards' be silent.

Finally SMS notifications come from the SMS app not the service provider's
app (ebay, instacart, etc). In the AOSP Messaging app it allows you to set different settings for each sender, so you could eg mute notifications from your bank but have family members' SMS each make a different noise.

(this is in GrapheneOS of Android 15, but I think this also applies to stock Android too)

See Theo's response. He fully describes all the angles of your

Correction, this is in the system settings for the 'Messaging' app, rather
than in the app itself. But in the app if you go Settings -> General -> Notifications it takes you to the system notification settings for that app.
So the settings look like they're part of the app but they aren't.

Yes - *if* the "future current transactions" use the same notification
    channel in the app.

Many apps provide more than one notification channel and you can select
which notifications you want to see at all and and which not. If you
disable notifications for one channel, you will *never* see them again
until you enable that channel again. But what channels there are, depend
on the app. Some only have one generic type of notifications and others
may have different channels like "Messages", "News" or account specific notifications.

And whenever you get a notification, you can can tap and hold it until additional options will be opened where you can tap "Turn off
notifications" wich will disable *all* notifications from that app in
that specific channel of the app. And you can also select, if that
notification channel should be silent or use the default notification sound/vibration.

I did make mixed references to the two, but that's largely because I
can't remember if they reply to me by text or notification.

I read that lnstacart will now deliver food, and all I did is go see
what restaaurants near me participate, and now they are Notifying me of
things I don't care about. I'm almost sorry I looked. I might want to
order cooked food delieery or grocery delivery.

Too many options, too much to keep track of, but thank you for your
detailed description, and thanks to everyone.
