    Short version - building-up memory chips (and other
    kinds) requires little holes between the layers to
    create electrical connections. Alas below a certain
    size and the holes can't be filled-up with conductive
    material properly ... it tends to just overcoat the
    top of the hole and nothing gets down the the layer
    below.

    It has now been found that introducing xenon to the
    manufacturing atmosphere helps prevent this, maybe
    physically 'coating' the walls of the hole. Using
    this, material CAN be reliably deposited in the
    hole from bottom-up.

    Xenon is expensive, but use per-batch can likely
    be optimized. It's also infinitely recyclable.
    Dual atomic-scale membranes might be able to
    concentrate xenon and only then would cyrogenic
    methods be needed for final purification.
