• Fedora 42 pre-releae

From rbowman@21:1/5 to All on Wed Apr 2 22:41:50 2025
fwiw upgrading my Fedora box from 41 to the 42 pre-releae KDE Plasma
version for Fedora Test Days went well. I did have to remove python3-qt5- webkit but I suspect if I had run the 'remove unused packages' tool it
would have been gone long ago.

It is using the 6.14.0 kernel.

After upgrading to 41 I noticed my fedora box had some rawhide packages installed (presumably I'm responsible, but I haven't wanted to use it
for about a decade, so disabled repos)

It still runs fine, but I'm expecting the upgrade to 42 to be "interesting"

41 is "good". Hopefully 42 will be equally good - but,
these days, it's maybe better to wait for a .1 release -
they tend to launch a tad TOO soon of late. BookWorm
was the same way - indeed seemed DEDICATED to making
sure the stuff I used most wouldn't work :-) Also way
too 'Buntu ... who the hell did they hire ??? Deb is
supposed to be 'core', 'the foundation', boring but
    super solid/consistent.

I think it was 39 to 40 that was a little rocky for a few weeks in the KDE spin. There was a lot going on with Qt, KDE, and Wayland that took sorting
out. So far 42 has been a non-event. I ran through all the stuff I use
    with no problems.

The only problem I've had recently was with the Raspberry Pi OS. The
kernel was optimized for RPi 5 and whatever was updated in VS Code did not
play well so I had to move back to the RPi 4 kernel.

Ubuntu had some updates Monday and they didn't break anything either.

I initially tried f41-LXDE early on and it was NOT ready
for prime time. The XFCE spin WAS good however.

Pi-5 is just kinda WEIRD ... I wish they'd gone some
other direction, even if it meant more of a wait, in
order to increase compatibility with the older PIs.

I just stopped using Ubuntu some years ago - it kept,
pointlessly, deviating from Deb in too many ways ...
plus Canonical was relentless promoting its 'cloud'
junk (hard to install without it). Mostly these days
I'm happy with MX (but DID have to use MX-AHS on
    that new n150 mini-box I bought).

Anyway, Ralf solved my NHS problem today and I'm
    in a good mood.

I put Lubuntu on an old netbook, It had originally used LXDE but switched
to LXQt because of LXDE problems. Good thing they both start with 'L'. My Debian box is XFCE. My preference is KDE but I can live with almost any
    DE.

It is in a strange niche. I bought the Canakit which has a heat sink,
fan, and a heavier power supply. It doesn't run super hot but the fan
isn't for decoration only. I bought a 3B+ last week for another project
and it's a lot less hungry. Works fine although I went with the legacy
Bullseye version rather than Bookworm. My Debian box is still Bullseye
    too.

The Ubuntu wasn't a planned thing. My original intent was to put Kubuntu
on the Beelink SER4 but I had problems with the iso. I had a Ubuntu iso
handy and it worked. I don't customize a DE or change anything beyond the
left handed mouse so like I said I can live with almost anything as long
as I can find the apps I use. I do use Konsole on Ubuntu rather than gnome-terminal.
