• FOSS Comes Thru Again

From Farley Flud@21:1/5 to All on Tue Dec 24 18:50:01 2024
FOSS has produced yet another image compression algorithm called LERC:

    http://esri.github.io/lerc/

LERC has been around for a while but I just recently discovered it.

I have not yet tried it but it offers much faster lossless compression
    versus PNG.

Also, lossy compression can be strictly defined by the user.

Yes, folks, this is FOSS. There ain't no hand holding or "click on
the pretty button" interface. One either knows what one is doing
or else one runs like a baby to mamma Micro$lop/Apphole.

I encourage you all to try LERC and report your results.

A lot people on this group have big, fat mouths but when it comes
down to presenting results they fall like a lead balloon.

So after 9 years, who is using this obscure image compression codec?

Oops! I forgot to describe how I discovered LERC.

The folks that create libtiff, the universal TIFF image reader/writer,
had decided to include LERC as a compression option:

    https://libtiff.gitlab.io/libtiff/

Probably most image processing software in the world uses
libtiff. The fact that they have include LERC is quite significant.

But what does a fucking childish gamer know?

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

    Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

You are swayed primarily by popularity. Pffffffft!

FYI, GNU/Linux/FOSS is not a popularity contest. GNU/Linux/FOSS
offers many capabilities from which the informed user may choose.

I emphasize that it is the user that determines what GNU/Linux/FOSS
software to select for his needs.

LERC provides yet another option from the cornucopia which is
    GNU/Linux/FOSS.

If you don't want/need it then shut the fuck up.

But to me it looks promising and, when I have the time/inclination
I shall certainly take it for a spin.

What the fuck do you know? All you do is gaming like a stunted,
    stupid kid.

    Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

You too. Even if you do it the other way around, it's exactly the same principle.

    Pffffffft!

    Exactly.

FYI, GNU/Linux/FOSS is not a popularity contest.

Agreed. You should remember that when you criticize a too popular
    software.

GNU/Linux/FOSS offers many capabilities from which the informed user
    may choose.

Yes. And the popularity is a something to take into account. Because
using a software well spread has several advantages. Like, you'll be
more likely to find help if you need it. Or, like if a lot of users find
it good, it's more likely to be useful to you. And it will be more
likely to have more features/support in the long run.

If you don't want/need it then shut the fuck up.

You should remember that, too, each time you brag about a software.
