'Vegans could be more likely to be depressed because they drink
plant-based milk, a study suggests.
However, fans of semi-skimmed drinks are at a lower risk of both anxiety
and depression.
Data was gathered from more than 350,000 people enrolled in a UK Biobank study who were followed for more than a decade and assessed for signs of mental health issues.
It found that when age, health and income are taken into account, those
who drink semi-skimmed milk are 12 per cent less likely to be depressed
and 10 per cent less likely to have anxiety.
Drinking skimmed milk, however, was found to have no benefit, whereas drinking other milks, such as soya and almond milk, was associated with
a 14 per cent increased risk of depression.
“Milk is a rich source of nutrients such as lactose, lipids, protein,
and minerals, which are essential for maintaining human health,” the scientists from the Southern Medical University wrote in their study.'
