• 25 kernels

    From Chris Ahlstrom@21:1/5 to All on Sat May 17 08:29:04 2025
    So I do an update of Debian Sid, and it starts updating initrd images, and continues, continues, continues.... 25 kernels from 6.10.11 to 6.12.27.

    Purged 22 of them. FTS. FFS.

    Move your ass over to Gentoo, where all updates are totally in your
    control.

    No more surprises. No more doubts. (And no one to blame but yourself.)

    It's a bit of a shock at first, but once acclimatized the user will
    have found paradise.

    I feel your pain:

    _[/boot]_(vallor@lm)🐧_
    $ ls vmlinuz-* | wc -l
    33

    Almost all of those are manually-installed, so the Mint software updater
    won't touch them. (You can set it to keep only two distro kernels.)

    Meanwhile, I have some of this going on:

    _[/home/vallor/OS]_(vallor@lm)🐧_
    $ ls -d linux-*[0-9] | wc -l
    70

    70 built kernels, which I need to start removing (or run "make clean")
    to make room on the NAS.

    The Arch laptop is at 6.14.6. Only 1 kernel as far as I can tell with a quick look.

    I've already installed Gentoo, two different occasions, years ago.

    For Nokia, it led to the acquisition of their entire mobile business by Microsoft, just to head off an impending high-profile defection to
    Android.

    In other words, it was a matter of saving corporate face. A very
    expensive, multi-billion-dollar way of saving corporate face, but who in

    Canonical has been cosying up to Microsoft more and more lately. And they
