Roger Nichols, the composer behind some of Carpenters’ greatest hits,
has died at the age of 84. The songwriter was a composer and songwriter
who was behind Carpenters’ biggest hits We’ve Only Just Begun and Rainy Days and Mondays, and was a frequent collaborator. It was announced that
he died on May 17, but the news was only just made public. Paul
Williams, his songwriting partner of many years, confirmed the news in a
    post (Picture: AnythingGoes)

A composer of some of the prettiest and most memorable songs of the 20th century. He will be missed.

the carpenters were not a band i listened to much ,
but they did what they did fairly well

I only discovered their existence after watching a documentary on Karen Carpenter. I didn't grow up in the 70s, and the music industry had
largely moved on from that style in the 80s when I was a kid. Still,
there is no denying that she had a fantastic voice and that the songs themselves were beautiful.

heavily after Karen Carpenter's death in 1983.

It was anachronistic but a tasteless joke was if Cass Eliot and Karen
Carpenter had shared the ham sandwich they both would be alive.

Eliot died in '74 and Carpenter in '83. They both were 32. Choking on a sandwich was dreamed up by Eliot's manager to defuse the idea she had
    OD's.

They were a little too pop for my taste but didn't cause me to start
punching buttons on teh car radio like The Association.
