Okay. Is there a specific reason you opted to use it? Does it add something
you wanted or fix a known bug?

I build and boot the latest kernel in order to test the build, and
the kernel itself, on my workstation. Part of that is also making
sure the latest NVIDIA drivers work properly.

I've been looking at the Changelog, and haven't found anything major
(yet) that it fixes. (There are some minor fixes to wifi drivers
that probably don't affect me. Also, Linus has a fix at the very
end of the Changelog that looks like it prevents a problem with
    epoll.)

Though the he previous kernel (.6) had a security mitigation for a
processor bug with some AMD processors, I just checked, and found
    this:

    $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/tsa
    Not affected

So that apparently doesn't affect my threadripper.

    Check the Changelog here:

(A lot of it is "inside baseball", and I don't pretend to understand
all of it, but I still try to keep up. :) )

That's Ubuntu 25.04. The Fedora box is 6.15.5.

    https://9to5linux.com/future-ubuntu-releases-will-ship-with-the-latest- and-greatest-linux-kernel

Ubuntu is supposed to be staying a little more up to date. I don't know
about the downstream forks. My Fedora box is 4th gen Intel so I doubt the frequent new kernels are any improvement that I see.

The minor versions, i.e. 6.15.x, are generally not worth building.
    There are only insignificant differences.

Only the major versions, 6.16.x being the next major version series,
    are important.

I am anxiously awaiting 6.16.x being released as it will add
the X86_NATIVE_CPU option that allows optimization with "gcc -march=native."

I agree. Although, I tend to wait awhile after the initial release for a
few minor updates before I go tinkering.

After the kernel, the next most critical software is GLIBC, or the GNU C Library, and the next release is very soon:

    https://sourceware.org/glibc/

I build GLIBC at every release using full GCC optimizations.

Ahh. :) This may seem like a dumb question on the surface being as Linux isn't the goto for gaming, but...I am curious.. Are you a Linux based gamer?

Yes. I run Elite Dangerous Odyssey through Steam on proton. Have been
playing it for over 10 years.

Another recent game I played was Tiny Tina's Wonderland. Haven't finished it, but did finally beat the banshee, immediately after which there is an in-game event that I thought was really well done.

Also played Starfield when it first came out. Got bored with it.

Or, are you by chance using this rig for crypto?

    Nooooooo. Crypto is a ripoff.

This machine didn't come with Windows. I added it to a virtual host recently, installed Windows 11 Pro for Workstations, since I wanted to mess with ReFS. Very disappointing. All I use it for now is for the Windows native Kindle reader, since some books aren't readable with the web reader.

I'm curious as to what you
primarily do with the rig; especially now that you are specifically ensuring it won't have an issue with the NVIDIA drivers. If you were using Windows, I'd suspect gamer right off the bat. <G>

I do understand your pain concerning video drivers. I'm running a RADEON on this rig and it's actually using RADEON drivers! Yay. <G>

*larf* Hey, this is nothing though; I still have a dual pentium 3 800mhz dual CPU mated server system that's still in operation; I've ran Windows XP sp3 corp edition (with a legit key) for a very long time on it, prior to
that it was Windows 2000 SP4. It's an old Tyan Tiger 230 server board based system; 4 ram banks; but in my case, I have one that's offline; It has a burnt out trace on the mainboard; the magic smoke was released years ago
when a ram stick failed in a most spectacular manner. No biggie, the other 3 banks are still operational. She's an old rig and has been thru hell and back with me.

I've been looking at the Changelog, and haven't found anything major
(yet) that it fixes. (There are some minor fixes to wifi drivers
that probably don't affect me. Also, Linus has a fix at the very
end of the Changelog that looks like it prevents a problem with
    epoll.)

It's good that you take the time to check the docs before? you make critical changes to the system. FWIW, I consider a kernel change to be system critical. :) YMMV.

Though the he previous kernel (.6) had a security mitigation for a
processor bug with some AMD processors, I just checked, and found
    this:

    $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/tsa
    Not affected

So that apparently doesn't affect my threadripper.

Ayep. This particular rig is running a significantly older AMD CPU that's
not vulnerable to nearly any of the checks performed by inxi; it comes with the MX Linux distro. Handy little utility.

    Vulnerabilities:
    Type: gather_data_sampling status: Not affected
    Type: indirect_target_selection status: Not affected
    Type: itlb_multihit status: Not affected
    Type: l1tf status: Not affected
    Type: mds status: Not affected
    Type: meltdown status: Not affected
    Type: mmio_stale_data status: Not affected
    Type: reg_file_data_sampling status: Not affected
Type: retbleed mitigation: untrained return thunk; SMT vulnerable
    Type: spec_rstack_overflow status: Not affected
Type: spec_store_bypass mitigation: Speculative Store Bypass disabled via prctl
Type: spectre_v1 mitigation: usercopy/swapgs barriers and __user pointer sanitization
Type: spectre_v2 mitigation: Retpolines; STIBP: disabled; RSB filling; PBRSB-eIBRS: Not
    affected; BHI: Not affected
    Type: srbds status: Not affected
    Type: tsx_async_abort status: Not affected

    Check the Changelog here:

    https://cdn.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v6.x/ChangeLog-6.15.7

(A lot of it is "inside baseball", and I don't pretend to understand
all of it, but I still try to keep up. :) )

I may as well go ahead and do that then. Although I'm using an older version and having no issues with the hardware. Other than your typical WINE flakiness with some apps; but a kernel update or rollback won't help me with that.
Thanks for sharing the kernel update information here!

I wasn't bashing on Linux with my comment. :) It's just not the default OS
for gaming. The clue for me was their concern about the video drivers. That made me suspect they were part of a small, but, rising, Linux based gaming community.

And this is for Windows games!

I haven't played any Windows games in years myself. The last one was a 1st person shooter and I was storming the beaches at normandy (atleast I think that's where the character I played was stationed). I'm mostly into the
older games, via emulation on the consoles I grew up with as a kid. Nintendo and Atari.

Yes. I run Elite Dangerous Odyssey through Steam on proton. Have been
playing it for over 10 years.

Another recent game I played was Tiny Tina's Wonderland. Haven't
finished it, but did finally beat the banshee, immediately after which

Also played Starfield when it first came out. Got bored with it.

Haha. Nice. I bet they run nice and smooth on your rig too, yea?

Or, are you by chance using this rig for crypto?

    Nooooooo. Crypto is a ripoff.

I agree completely! I can't tell you how many rigs I've gone to do service work on that were essentially worn out from doing crypto mining 24/7 for as long as the machines would last. It does wear them out.

    Yes.

Having never run Starfield on Windows, I can't tell you if it is smoother
there -- but some games run better on Linux, thanks to DXVK, which
is the DirectX-to-Vulkan translator. It looked fine to me.

Actually, haven't run _any_ games on Windows on _this_ machine -- it
didn't even come with Windows, being a System76 Linux workstation.

    Processor:
Model name: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X 32-Core Processor

Sometimes, Elite Dangerous has a lower frame rate at Odyssey settlements,
but that is a complaint on Windows, too. Haven't been running into that lately, so I think they've been making improvements. Haven't had to
worry about problems with other games chugging.

In fact, there's only one "game" that I want to play that didn't work
the last time I tried it: MS Flight Simulator 2024. Haven't tried it with
a newer proton, been meaning to get around to it.

What did you find the most disappointing about ReFS?

Basically that MSFT hasn't spent much, if any, time developing it.
For example, I wanted to resize my ReFS filesystem, and learned that it
isn't supported. That's when I replaced it with NTFS. I think ReFS is all
but abandonware at this stage, correct me if I'm wrong.

Just looked up MSFS 2024, and I see that it is listed as "Silver" now.
Might have to try it this weekend.

Incidentally, a new Linux kernel came out a few days ago.

Surely Microsoft needs a next-generation filesystem to keep up with all
the options (e.g. ZFS, btrfs) available in the Linux/BSD world. Are they
just giving up on that? Or is there something just “too hard” about retrofitting a major new filesystem on top of the Windows kernel, which is
so heavily built around the assumption that the primary filesystem shall
    always be NTFS?

As far as I am personally concerned, Snit Michael Glasser of Prescott /
Phoenix Arizona is unable to produce a single direct post made by
myself to back up his claims.
That is because there are none.

He is also making claims against others like Gremlin, Carroll and
others and he also refuses to produce any direct statements from those

Snit has now been shunned in ACW where the regulars will not reply
directly to snit or anything he posts so now he is going bat shit crazy
at the lack of attention, hence the ridiculous apologies and the like.

It won't work. I pity the Usenet group he moves to next. Fortunately
there is so much information on the Internet regarding the lunatic Snit
Michael Glasser of Prescott / Phoenix Arizona, that people will not be
    fooled for very long.

You would think that after having the users in a number of Usenet groups refuse to reply to him anymore, something would click in the head of
Snit Michael Glasser Prescott Computer Guy which would lead to him
realizing that the problem is not everyone else, it's him.

It's unfortunate that my Linux thread got hijacked into a Snit thread.
Alas, that's what happens when he's around -- as has been shown time
and again on other newsgroups, including cola.

(I'll start another Linux thread if there's interest.)

BTW, I've been enjoying Mike's posts about QM over on ACW. More of that, please.

    Yep.
That's how snit Michael Glasser of Prescott / Phoenix Arizona operates.
He is the most dishonest POS I have ever encountered.
I can now understand possibly why he can't work for a company where he
has to interact with other people. Snit is such a nasty SOB they would
run him out of the company in short order.

As in your case, those MID say nothing about specific posts by me
    demonstrating a white supremacy attitude.
And of course snit has morphed his story multiple times as he has with
    his false claims against you.

His insane claims about me were posted to other groups, probably by that other moron
peescent, and even my liberal detractors have not jumped on it and they
surely would if there was any truth in snit's accusations.

TBH I have talked to my attorney at a family BBQ today, regarding this snit BS and since I am a well known
Internet person snit's false accusations constitute libel even though my real name is not
    used.
It' similar to defaming a trademark like say Vaseline.

    When a regular has said something to me, it's been about my being repetitive concerning my issues with snit; they understand and agree with me concerning what he went and did here towards me. To be clear, for all, Snit wrote a completely bullshit story accusing me of having a copy of the floodbot;
either in source or compiled form. Snit has morphed this accusation to claim that I wrote the source code to the floodbot was mine; that I wrote the damn thing. None of snits claims concerning me, or steve carroll, concerning the floodbot are true. Snit continues to lie his fucking ass off.

If anything, the floodbot was a benefit for snit, not anyone else. It was
used to assist snit in his efforts to search engine seed slime against
several of us. IE: slang for google fucking a person. While not proven
beyond a doubt, it's most likely that snit ran the floodbot; because it was easily prevented from posting to usenet with a minor change via google.
anyone else behind it would have the skills to retool it to access usenet
via another manner. Not Snit. Snit would be limited and fucked at that point. Coincidently, or not, that's how the floodbot was stopped. Interesting to
    note, yea?

TBH I have talked to my attorney at a family BBQ today, regarding this
snit BS and since I am a well known Internet person snit's false
accusations constitute libel even though my real name is not used.
It' similar to defaming a trademark like say Vaseline.

Snit Michael Glasser Prescott parasite and Computer Guy uses the typical Marxist attack of "white supremacist," "racist," "islamophobe,"
"anti-semite" and whatever else to shut down debate by forcing you on
the defensive. Don't fall for it. Besides, it only makes sense to be a
white supremacist anyway since whites are responsible for the greatest achievement in world history, and being an islamophobe only makes sense considering how islam is in the West to conquer (whether softly or by
force) and has a long history of enslaving, murdering, pedophilia.
inbreeding and even using the whites they enslaved to conquer further (janissaries). That said, to Hell with any whites who aren't proud of

I'd be one of the first in the line!

No, they don't. Not even remotely resembling such a thing. That, as you
can see, doesn't stop snit from continuing to share them and
fraudulently try to state they are evidence that you dislike jewish
people. I've never seen so much as a single post from you that would
indicate racism of any fucking kind. Again, it's not only dishonest of
Snit to do this; it *also demonstrates his severe reading comprehension
issues*; he still denies it's an issue for him, but we all clearly see
    it is.

The imbecile snit Michael Glasser of Prescott / Phoenix Arizona has it
stuck in his point skull that because I point out his trolling, lies and basically everything deceptive he tries to con people with, it's because
    he's Jewish. It's hilarious!

I didn't even know he was Jewish until he mentioned it. Snit makes up shit about us; because we don't let snit slide on the lies and other forms of trolling that snit engages in on a daily basis.

In one way though, it is hillarious. I don't have to keep telling anyone
that snit has severe reading comprehension issues; severe as in, isn't
even reading on a 5th grader level. Snit proves this is true when he
shares those 'receipts'; quoting us out of context to support whatever
    bullshit story he's concocted.

And, as soon as you call him out on it, snit will double down! And, in
some cases, expand on the original lie. Example: the revised floodbot
story where he claims I wrote the fucking code to it! He quotes he's
using, completely out of context, was part of a discussion between David
and myself where I wrote about my wall greeter source code; the source
code David Brooks posted here and asked for snit to help him with; help
snit didn't to this day provide him.

For some reason he believes that is a factor and that's because he can
come up with no logical reason for the legions of people who tell him basically the same things I do.

In what passes for a brain for snit, snit is convinced that snit is
perfectly okay; hundreds of other people, across different newsgroups, are
the issue. That's how snit parses 'logic' On our tax paying dimes!

    Snit is a loon!
The other residents in that homeless shelter snit is allegedly living in
had better watch him carefully because he's crazy enough to snap and go postal.

While true, he poses no significant physical threat to anyone. Even if he
was armed with something other than a firearm, he still doesn't pose a
real threat. Personally, I'd love the opportunity to engage with him, even
if I know ahead of time his entire 'plan' goes south as soon as the first
one lands on him. Snit gives an all new meaning to the expression; crying
    like a bitch.

You should have heard his fake as fuck spanish accent he tried with me
when he was screening his calls; due to bill collectors. He's as
financially responsible as he is a responsible driver. IE: He isn't.

Yep. His list for me though is actually pretty damn funny. :)

    Indeed.
It's STOP for the snit troll.

It also proves! that snit doesn't understand what snit reads at a 5th
grader level; let alone an adult reading level. The funniest part is that
snit is well into his 50s, and, despite decades of age, cannot read beyond
that of a special ed 5th grader.

Snit seems to enjoy being ridiculed in public.
It's odd behavior for a grown man.

It's odd behavior for a grown man in the states to be reading at the level
he does. It's very unusual for an adult to walk around in public with a
stuffed animal in snits pocket for emotional support. And, let's not
forget, he pissed on his own damn cat! And thought an eyeball left it's eyesocket and literally, rolled away! What in the fuck do you have to be
    on to make such observations?

Just how do you piss on a cat, a cat?! of all things. And why in the
absolute fuck would you then go and write having done such a thing? Snit
does not fire on all 3 cylinders. Atleast one is dead weight and another
sounds like it's trying to swell up and cease IN the fucking cylinder
    wall.

Snit is the kind of guy who thinks to check the oil when the pressure
    gauge reads 0.

Since his floodbot was rendered useless, snit admitted that his current trolling with % was for the purpose of diluting the groups message base.

You're leaving out the best part. The condition snit placed upon doing
that. If Apd would have just complied with Snits demands. :)

Sounds a lot like what his floodbot was doing.
Yet another piece of circumstantial evidence showing snit as being
    behind the floodbot.

That and the bot benefitting snit, and only snit, by attacking his
adversaries and assisting with his search engine seed sliming work.

BTW, snit's latest lie is claiming that you, I and the others were going
    to avoid talking about him.

Yep. Snit got that impression from what we actually wrote because (a) he
can't read and (b) snit likes to make things up about people; this is
something that snit is so well known for doing, it's documented on the
    snit list methods of lieing.

Snit's poor reading comprehension skills strike again as that is not
    what was agreed upon.
We agreed to cease talking/posting/replying DIRECTLY TO SNIT.

    Exactly.

See what a little shit liar snit Michael Glasser of Prescott / Phoenix Arizona is?

    No question about that.

It also appears you have broken snit again.

It wasn't hard to do. I simply post the truth about him and his bestie,
catch them both in lies, and call them out for it. And unlike snit, I
actually do bring those receipts. case in point, David Brooks dishonestly claimed that he didn't write that snit never helped him (snit tried to
support Davids play too, btw) but, it wasn't hard for me to find David
Brooks post where he did exactly as I'd written, exactly as Kelly
commented. david Brooks dishonestly claimed Kelly was lieing, with snits blessing, of course.

When I shared David Brooks post, Kelly asked for an apology. David Brooks
side stepped that entirely and falsely claimed I lied about his drinking problem. David *depends* on nobody going into alt.politics.scorched-earth
and reading those threads related to his excessive drinking problem. David Brooks has a large set of balls knowing what was discussed in that
newsgroup and playing really stupid about it here. David must think like
snit concerning usenet all of a sudden? Snits stupidity seems to be
    rubbing off on him.

He's behaving even more bizarre now that nobody except % and BD reply to
him. As always it will be entertaining to watch snit once again break

It's great isn't it? Snit *hates* the lack of attention. <G>
