• Minix 1.1 on Qemu; "-fda Intel-1.1/floppy_disk1", "no bootable image"

    Hello,

How is Minix 1.1 installed using the images
    from http://download.minix3.org/previous-versions/bzipped/Intel-1.1.tar.bz2 ?
    I have tried "$ qemu-system-i386 -fda Intel-1.1/floppy_disk1 -hda volume"
where "volume" is "$ fallocate -l 200K volume; mkfs.minix volume"
and mirrored the file tree from the disk images and tar files to "volume".
(I have also tried explicitly listing fda as the boot device.)
Qemu says that there is no bootable image.
file(1) says that Intel-1.1/floppy_disk1 is a "Linux kernel".
I hexdumped floppy_disk1 and there is no bootable
signature so I'm lost at this point, as the Readme file
lists disk 1 as the boot disk.

From what I've read on the internet, this would have once
been considered an inexcusable question. But I have spent
days looking for (_for_, not through) documentation, looking
at Usenet threads, searching around the minix3 website,
and general Googling to no avail.
