You know, this group is oddly dead, being the place where
Linux was first shown. I would expect more activity than
    this.

This group died long time ago when Minix itself died.

It's a shame that the last big open source Unices left are
Linux and BSD. It's either one of those two or something
    outdated as hell.

Lots of smaller projects are building *nixens. Some based on micro
kernels, some not. Some leaning towards Linux's ABI, others not.

The question is: Will one of the newcomers ever gain traction?

    I've my doubt.

Additionally we will see 32bit PCs being unsupported soon. FreeBSD and
OpenBSD already see them as second class citizens and Debian will not
release kernels any more for them starting with the next release.

Linux is big-$$$'s favourite now and may beat MINIX's massive market
presence. (Add the Android user count on Linux side too.)

The problem is that many people are attempting to build
a complete desktop operating system which isn't viable.

Microsoft has had a 40 year head-start (35 if you take NT
as the baseline) with thousands of employees working on it
every day. That's not something you can easily
catch-up with (although some attempts, like RedoxOS
and SerenityOS have done an admirable job) even if you
cull many of the included bloatware.

Developers should focus on something that's feasible,
like a server operating system or signage display OS.

There's more activity in the Google Group but I despise
Google Groups so I rarely post there.

What would it take for people to take-up Usenet groups again?
An easier-to-use Usenet reader? Culling of groups with little
    or no activity?

I left before due to the torrent of shit coming from Google Groups and
the fact that my ISP tanked its news server. For awhile, it was hard to
find a free one to replace it.

Back in the day, you'd have usenet, IRC, and maybe a web forum or
two. Nowadays, there's many web forums, Discord, and social media to
    contend with .
