About the Author
Ron Lieber is the author of The Opposite of Spoiled and is the Your Money columnist for the New York Times. Two of his books have been New York Times bestsellers, and he is a three-time winner of the Gerald Loeb Award, business journalism’s highest

Title: Equal pay for girls

Review: What really struck me was reading about what chores we assign to boys vs girls and the pay that goes along with it. Also, the book mentioned how much moms downplay what they do and emphasize doing the laundry, etc. After reading this, I started
talking to my girls about what I did for work. This book also said we are more likely to encourage girls to volunteer and give of themselves. I guess the point I want to make is...it made me stop and think! And I changed the way I approached certain
topics with my girls.

Title: A bit too “Raising Kids Who Are Grounded Even If You’re Not”

Review: There were some helpful ideas in here for how to talk to kids about money, manage their allowance, and instill gratitude and a strong work ethic in them. But ultimately, it was really hard to look past the elephant in the room in so many examples:
the materialism and lack of groundedness that characterizes a lot of people highlighted in his examples and, presumably, many of the people this book seems to target. The book is at its most helpful when it straightforwardly tells readers to be
transparent with their kids about money—from budgeting to answering the question “Are we rich?” But it’s hard to read when it’s advising parents who send their kids to elite private schools and summer camps, when it’s talking about how to
make lower-income friends given the (unchallenged) reality of housing and education segregation, or when it’s telling readers to have their kids pay for some of their college expenses as though it’s not simply the reality (and a common sense value
connected to work ethic) for the vast majority of Americans. It also doesn’t ever address the idea that there actually are limits to what we ought to spend on our kids, even for the most well-off. Given the correlation the author talks about between
high levels of materialism and lower levels of happiness—and the realities of climate change and a finite planet that he doesn’t ever talk about—we don’t have to struggle to articulate reasons for limiting what our kids have when we have enough
money to buy them more. The reasons are all around us—Americans consume too much, and it’s bad for us and for the planet. It’s a message that kids—and their parents most of all, it seems from this book—need to hear. And they won’t listen to
what we tell them about money if we don’t live it ourselves—something this book doesn’t point out to those readers who actually do, apparently, have “too much.”

Review: Does a great job discussing various strategies for teaching your children how to earn, save and spend their money. They need to do it ASAP because the older they get the harder it is to get them to listen. Both my grandsons, age 6 and 8 earned $
100 this summer at my house. My daughter bought this book and told me a lot of the ideas discussed were things I had taught both her and her brother early in life. I decided to purchase a book for a friend who is having problems with his 9 year old
daughter. My only problem with the book was that I hoped it would cover more than financial issues with children.

Review: I've been struggling with finding a common theme for teaching my kids values important to me (we're not religious) and Leibers got a great approach via an overlooked and misunderstood fact of life: money! Some great point about thrift, hard work,
charity and other values I'd like to instill. Great examples of easy things you can do and discussions you can have to use money as a tool for building values, life skills and critical thinking in your kids. Absolutely recommend this book.
