What is custom hardware?

Is a Linux box that you build from parts and and run a customized
distribution custom hardware?

I think that it's fairly well known that Google does have a lot of
custom servers. They are used for a lot of different things. Again, I
can't be more specific.

If a custom build with a tweaked distro counts, then sure, that's
exactly what they had in '98.

No, custom ELECTRONICS. Like, ONE router which can answer all the WORLD's requests which has ten MILLION output ports on the other side to which ten million servers can be connected. (ones in other geographical areas will just need a *wire* that long...)

I can tell you for certain that Google is not using any such router.
