That depends.
The client itself, installed, is about 600 MB after a fresh install.
However, this number is just the baseline. The total size of your
Steam directory will likely be much higher but the actual number will
between users. Steam will download various files relating to your game
libary (game information, cover images), so the more games you have,
the more disk space you'll need. Save-games and screenshots are also
usually saved in subfolders of the Steam directory. And, of course,
the games themselves are usually installed into a subdirectory in the
Steam folder too. Steam also does a pretty poor job of cleaning up
after itself, so if you uninstall games it doesn't always delete all
the files in the games folder.
End result, the more games you own and install, the larger the
footprint Steam will leave on your hard-drive. That said, it's still
fairly insignificant compared to modern hard-drive sizes. With
thousands of games in my library and never having refreshed my Steam
install in years and years of use, my Steam folder (minus screenshots
and game-installs) hovers just under 5GB. Were I to uninstall and then re-install (refreshing the client) I'm sure it would be significantly
less.
