• My favorite game is EDO

From vallor@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jul 21 02:30:13 2024
Elite Dangerous Odyssey: it's my go-to game. (I have Starfield,
but haven't been playing that lately.)

It's said that EDO is a mile wide and an inch deep,
but there is depth to the game if you look for it.

Actually, it's more of a simulator, with gameplay bolted
onto it. Yet exploration, trading (space trucking), bounty hunting,
and space battles can be done in PVE or PVP environments.

And the environment is big. Real big: a 1:1 scale simulation
    of the Milky Way.

As a live service game, Frontier Developments has to keep adding
fresh content. One thing they just added is "Supercruise Overdrive
Frame Shift Drives", which act like ordinary supercruise, but
    have a "boost" function.

Cmdr Buur compares "vanilla supercruise" with "SCO supercruise" here:

Unfortunately, the missions in the game are procedurally-generated
for the most part, and chained missions don't seem to be in the game
anymore. However, for those wanting to role-play and have an adventure,
I highly recommend the adventures at Elite Dangereuse:

p.s. I run EDO with SteamPlay on Linux.

A Cobra fits in 1 ft. by 1ft. on the sceen. There is way more than 1
sq. ft. of real estate aboard a Cobra. It is about the size of the
    Millennium Falcon which seats 4.

    I don't get it, unless you're exaggerating.

The sense of scale of the ships is hard to figure out if
you stay in the cockpit all the time -- but with Odyssey, we
now have "space legs" and can get out and look. (Earlier, you
could get out and look at your ship with a scarab rover, and Odyssey
adds the scorpion rover. But that's not the same as looking your
ship over while standing next to it.)

Also, have you tried the camera suite? ctrl-alt-space.

The Cobra has two seats. The Millennium Falcon has 4 in the
cockpit, and more in the back. In a larger ship, such as
the cutter, you can seat 4, which is a full "Team".

    Old term: "Wing"
    New term: "Team"
    Our term: "Squadbunch"

Who is "us"? Our player group. There's an amazing community
of EDO players that participate in different player groups. One
    of the largest is Canonn:

    https://canonn.science/

But that's not us. We are the much smaller "Dangus Investigations".

(Don't fly safe -- fly Dangus!)

I really wanted to get into EDO as I loved Elite and even yes Elite II
(and other space sim trading games with combat like WC: Privateer) in
the ancient ages, but it just felt dull. I may not have given it enough
    time though.
