Argh. You deserve to be staked out in the desert and covered with

As to the game itself...
Firstly, there's a demo for those not sure if it's for them: >https://store.steampowered.com/app/3062270/Empire_of_the_Ants__Demo/
Beyond that... well, the visuals are the game's biggest hook (and the
bugs, if you're into that sort of thing). But what little the trailers
show of the gameplay just doesn't look all that interesting. At best
it seems a rather humdrum RTS; some of its mechanics (riding a giant
snail? or leading armies of ants against armies of beetles?) seem
outright silly (and in direct opposition to the ultra-realistic theme
the visuals suggest), and apparently everything is done in
third-person mode, requiring you to shepherd your forces everywhere?
It just seems to lack any novelty or sophistication beyond its
graphics. I can't personally get excited about it.

It is pretty for sure, and detailed. I find the angle low to the
ground hard to see things and move, especially moving the mouse and
making orders. Maybe I should try a controller.. I have ordered a
couple of my two groups of ants to attack and claim territory but that

Well, given that each letter is the size of your entire body, I can
see the difficulty. Just reading a page is the equivalent of walking a
mile. A chapter would be a marathon.

Actually, I once found a complete system with a GeForce 790GTX and an

I'm a bit less sanguine about action/strategy RTS games, where you
have to take on the role of one of the soldiers on the battlefield and
order your troops from a ground-level perspective. I find it messy and
overly complicated. Even though several games -- "Battlezone" (1998)
or "Hostile Waters: Anteaus Rising", for instance-- rose to prominence
based on the mechanic, I think a lot of their success came from the
novelty of the idea rather than its workability. It's a concept that
is better left in the dustbin of history, as far as I'm concerned. ;-)

Ha, that video card would handle this game well than my old card. ;P
It was -still is- a quite capable system, despite it being over a
decade old at this point. Certainly it could handle a lot of my
mainstay games (<cough>Truck Simulators</cough>) well enough, and even
a lot of the more modern titles, if at reduced graphics levels. Which
says less about the power of the machine and more about the state of
modern gaming.
But mostly I keep it around because it has easy-swap SATA bays which

No, that's not what I said.
Well, except "Dune". I never really liked that one. Too crunky in its
design. RTS weren't worth playing until C&C/Warcraft, IMHO.
But I played the heck out of the C&C series, enjoyed Warcraft, played
Age of Empires (and Rise of Nations), and a whole bunch more. I'll
admit, I was never a fanatic about the genre, and I almost never
played them online. Mostly, my strategies revolved around turtling up
and making pretty bases, then building the biggest army and sending
them en masse to wipe out the baddies when they got too annoying.
(playing it sort of like SimCity except with annoying neighbors 😉.
Some engaged me more than others; for instance, I quite enjoyed the
"Ground Control" games, and I found the "Battle for Middle Earth"
games much more satisfying than even I expected. But they always
played second fiddle to more other genres I enjoyed more: FPS games,
or RPGs, for instance.
But the ones I enjoyed most were the ones where you had a god's eye
view of the battle and not the one that also required you to control a
unit on the ground, like "Hostile Waters", "BattleZone", "Sacrifice"
and -apparently- "Empire of Ants". I just don't find the hybrid mix of
RTS and FPS/TPS a good mixture.

I absolutely love Age of Empires 1 and 2. I always have one of the
definitive editions of those games installed. But I never cared for
any of the other RTS series. I tried all of the ones in your list and
the only one there I liked enough to finish was Warcraft 2 Tides of
Darkness.
Although my most played RTS is Total Annihilation my favourite is Ground Control. The main reason is that it removes the whole resource/base management aspects and just concentrates on the tactical gameplay. It
also didn't degenerate into a click-fest.
My view is games are better if they know what genre they are and stick
to it. That's why I have a problem with both XCOM:Enemy Unknown and the
Total War series. I just wish they have one core aspect.
An interesting one was Field of Glory:II where they ditched the basic campaign mode from their previous title and instead went with a series
of linked battles where occasionally you had a choice to make.
Bookmarked and wishlisted. This looks antastic!

Dune 2 was so awesome on my IBM PS/2 model 30 286 10 Mhz PC. I tried to >replay it, but gah its controls were awful adter playing modern RTS
games. One unit at a time?!
In fairness, I really only 'discovered' "Dune II" around the time that
I started playing "Warcraft" and (shortly afterwards) "Command &
Conquer".
[although I played the hell out of Cryo Interactive's
original "Dune" game. Man, that game had awesome music.]
Compared to those later RTS games, the limitations of "Dune II" were
really annoying, and it set my opinion of the game forever afterward.
I did have some fun with the remake, "Dune 2000", released some years afterward which used the engine and mechanics of "Command & Conquer
II". Although even then, it never ranked that highly, just because
that game came out when there was such a glut of RTS games that it
failed to stand out amongst its peers.
For a while on PC, I think there were more RTS games than FPS. I can't
say I played _all_ of them, but damned if I didn't try! So many titles
almost nobody even remembers anymore: Metal Fatigue, Submarine Titans,
Dark Reign, GeneWars, Baldies, Tzar, Beatdown, Seven Kingdoms,
Firewall, Hooligans, Enemy Nations, Machines, 7th Legion and so many
more...

Title and bolted on a few names from the book, and a couple of themes
(the whole service thing.)
But everything else was a mockery - assault rifles with an apparent
range of 10 feet, forcing the soldiers to shoot point blank at something
that can cut them in half with a swipe. Um yeah, sure.
And the whole psi corp stuff in SS uniforms, no wonder the film is
nicknamed Nazi Germany 90210.
Oh yeah, and the chick flying the ship dodging an asteroid coming in
FTL, yeah, these guys can't even spell science much less know any.
And don't forget the complete and utter lack of powered battle armor, something the book is most famous for popularizing.
"Starship Troopers" without powered armor is Star Wars without
lightsabers. I mean, sure you _could_... but why?*
In fairness, a lot of the other stuff mentioned above (the fascism,
the shitty science, the psi stuff) was part and parcel of the book
too, albeit not so central to the narrative. I'll forgive that... even
if I didn't necessarily enjoy it. But the lack of powered armor?

Actually the political stuff in the movie is almost the polar opposite
of the book. Heinlein wrote a war story about service, as in western democracy type "service". The citizenship criteria in the book was
_ANY_ kind of service. Being assigned as a park ranger planting trees
was service and could grant citizenship. He strongly emphasized that non-citizens were not an underclass.
The "Nazis BAAAAD!" parts of the movie were ALL Verhoeven, things that
he added deliberately. He's admitted that in interviews.
But, again, that said more for just how _many_ RTS games were
available in the late 90s/early 2000s. You literally could not keep
track of them all.

4 & 5 were pretty bad too, but because they were animated, I gave them
more of a pass. They were more obviously aimed at the younger-set, so
the shallow characters, story and dialogue seemed more appropriate.
The visuals were okay.
I wouldn't go out of my way to re-watch them, though. Frankly, the
entire movie franchise is pretty terrible.
(IMHO, obviously. It's all subjective. If you like the movies, good
for you; I'm glad you had more fun with them than I did!)
