The game is actually part of a genre called "narrative games", but
often referred to as "walking sims". Key concepts include...well,
walking obviously, but games where the focus is almost entirely on exploration with very little in the way of challenges such as combat
or puzzles (usually none of the former and very little or extremely simplistic ones of the latter), a lot of focus on environmental
storytelling, and a strong emphasis on atmosphere.
Similar games include "Dear Esther", "Gone Home", "Everybody's Gone to
the Rapture", "35mm", "Firewatch", "Tacoma", and "The Vanishing of
Ethan Carter" (amonst many more). The genre often dovetails with
first-person puzzle games like "Talos Principle", "The Witness" and
even "Portal", except those games gate your progress behind a variety
of puzzles.
Bonus: Any game where I can destroy a carpet by relentlessly padding at
it with my paws is okay by me.
"Stray" is a wonderfully cute game, but its appeal (I think) lies
almost entirely on the cuteness of its protagonist. Its story is
fairly humdrum, and its other characters pretty forgettable. It does
have nice some visuals and its atmosphere is pretty cool. But if you
don't like cats I think a lot of what makes this game special will
bypass you.

Absolutely for cat lovers. If you know cats, it is monumental how well
they have captured cat behavior. Gratuitous keybords, both computer and piano, abound.

Sooner or later you two will end fighting in the Thunder Dome. I'm going
to need an extra-large bucket of popcorn for the occasion.
This time I won't make a list, for a simple reason: I managed to stick
with one single game and not hop between multiple ones, and it's a
lenghty one: Pokmon Leaf Green (2004, GBA).
The remake of the international Gen I game. I have been playing it
since january, given that it is a game i can put away easily and not get hooked during the exams season. 30 minutes of playtime during the
morning commute, and a bit more during the weekends.
And boy, it feels like a chore. Despite all the QoL improvements over
the original (run button, 60fps, better pokmon storage management),
it's still an excruciating experience due to being faithful to the
original. Awful world design, slow grinding, not enough buttons, the
dreaded HMs requiring again the use of an "HM bitch"... it's made worse
by two extra details: 1) I'm not using legendaries this time, and 2) I
am staying away from the meta and using different monsters, but Nidoking
is still a required monster to make the game fair. On top of that, I
think the game is harder than the original. Less glitches, enemies can
do critical damage and status effects more often, and using Gen III
types changes things a lot.
I just don't know why I am playing this instead of Emerald, which is the
best GBA Pokmon.

I mean... if that's the definition of a cozy game then "Dark Souls" is
cozy. You can't die there either; you just respawn back at the last

But it got me to thinking... there really aren't MANY games left where
death has any lasting consequences. Long gone are the days when your character would snuff it and you'd have to restart the level (or, if
the game was particularly malicious, the game entire!). Even the
meanest just let you reload a save-game (and most of those autosave

It is. But I like a lot of those so there! *pffffftttt*
I'm not complaining or judging. I've been known to play those games
too, and besides, anyone with hundreds upon hundreds of hours invested
into a boring truck-driving game has no right to look down upon other people's genre's-of-choice.
I do have a bit of an issue with so many survival-crafting games often feeling like simple reskins of what's popular (same way I look askance
at the proliferation of truck-driving sims) but that's more of my wish
for more novelty and originality in the industry.
I mean, I do personally find a lot of the 'search for rock and twigs
so I can build Tool' mechanics of survival-crafting sort of tedious...
but again, this is coming from a person who thinks that carefully
driving along the highway at a modest 80kph and making sure to always
use my turn signal is engrossing entertainment. ;-)

Steam Deck. I could have put it on a flashcart, but I can't get myself
to play on a tiny GBA screen anymore, and my PAL gameboy player is
interlaced only, which is not handled well by modern TVs.
Im going to be stuck for some time in the final dungeon, so might as
well plug the Deck to the big TV and get comfy on the couch.
Wait, do you have a GBA?? That's so cool!
Especially if it's equipped with an Afterburner backlight mod.

Yeah. The theater experience is not something I miss. Give me the

Not sure if you're serious, but the biggest flaw in the GBA was a passive
LCD display. It was to improve battery life because it took disposable batteries. Nintendo didn't release a lighted LCD handheld until GBA SP,
which introduced a rechargable. It inspired the DS.
I always thought the SP looked like crap. The original was much sleeker.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afterburner_(modification_kit)
(Huh. It's actually a front light. Who knew?)
Anyway, when I had a GBA, I wanted an Afterburner in the worst way. It
was typical for me to play in my bathroom because it was the only place
that had the most direct light onto the screen.

But even the Gameboy's competitors -like Sega's

because they opted for better, battery-hungry screens. In almost every >respect, the GameGear was a far, far better machine than the Gameboy,

experience, but the backlight was too power hungry. Nintendo was right;
battery life was more important. I had a Gameboy. It lasted forever
because it was a simple, tiny, unlit LCD.
Most people don't even know what a Jaguar is, because Atari was no longer >>> a player in consoles. Started its plummeting decline around the 7800.
Does anyone even remember the benighted Lynx? You didn't. That was the
Gameboy contemporary, and it also made the mistake of backlighting. The
Jaguar was years later. They should have taken Nintendo's example to
heart by that time. ;^)
I have had up to three GBAs over the years, but nowadays all I have left
is a GB Micro, and let's face it: 20 years after buying it, presbyopia
is starting to become a problem with a 2 inches screen. I am fine with >>playing those on a modded 3ds with the bare metal gba firmware, but
after Deck and Switch it's hard to go back.
And what's the point anyway; emulation has gotten so good that unless
you're a die-hard retroist or are trying to speed-runs on authentic
hardware, you might as well just use an emulator and give yourself all
the advantages thirty years of tech- and game-development offer. With
things like upscaling, save-states and better controls, it's just a
better experience to emulate it on modern hardware.
Which isn't to say I have total disdain for original hardware (anyone
looking into my study filled with old computers and gaming consoles
will be able to tell you that!) but those aren't the machines I use to actively PLAY the old games on (unless absolutely necessary). But
there's something to be said about experiencing the 'old tech' every
now and again; the loud whir of the fans, the crunky static of old sound-cards, the agony of a BSOD or having to blow on the cartridge*
to get it to load.
But for actual play-throughs? Use an emulator.
* don't blow on your cartridges; the moisture in your breath does them
no favors. ;-)

More precisely, they're trying to end emulation they don't control.
Because pretty much all the major players nowadays rely on emulation
for their old line-up.
But regardless of what they (mostly Nintendo) want, emulation is not
going anywhere. It's been tested repeatedly in court, and so long as
no copyrighted code is used in the emulator, then they've no legal leg
to stop its distribution. And emulator developers have gotten VERY
good about clean-room recreations of hardware functions. Or at least,
they're gotten really good at dividing their code from any necessary copyrighted code (e.g., the BIOS) that the user has to provide
themselves.
As for the games themselves, well, they've perfect right to police the distribution of those... although the cat is waaaaay out of the bag
for most of those at this point, so it seems comically pointless for
them to keep chasing it. But I can't fault them their attempts.
(well, usually. Some games are impossible to buy and keeping those out
of public use for decades seems almost malicious... but a lot of the
better known stuff still has value (as in, people will pay to play
them if the games are available) so their shutting down the torrents
(or however kids distribute the games nowadays) doesn't bother me to
much.
