• What Have You Been Playing... IN FEBRUARY 2025?

From Ant@21:1/5 to All on Sat Mar 1 03:29:35 2025
I am going to beat Spalls since it is already March 2025 in the other side of the world. He has better not post a
    duplicate thread! ;)

As for me, same old. I want to see if I try a Steam game (Among 3D demo or Expeditions: A MudRunner Game) tonight
    before midnight PST in USA.

    He did...AGAIN!

    Nice "ninja", dude! :-D

Meanwhile, a few days ago, system colonization came to
Elite Dangerous. It's called "Trailblazers", and I've had
my eye on a system where I was first to set foot on one of
the moons, which has some good real estate. Building my
    first station now.

As a result of all the activity, carrier jump times have
increased across the board, sometimes over an hour (instead
of the usual 15 minutes). They need to fix that!

The game is actually part of a genre called "narrative games", but
often referred to as "walking sims". Key concepts include...well,
walking obviously, but games where the focus is almost entirely on exploration with very little in the way of challenges such as combat
or puzzles (usually none of the former and very little or extremely simplistic ones of the latter), a lot of focus on environmental
storytelling, and a strong emphasis on atmosphere.

Similar games include "Dear Esther", "Gone Home", "Everybody's Gone to
the Rapture", "35mm", "Firewatch", "Tacoma", and "The Vanishing of
Ethan Carter" (amonst many more). The genre often dovetails with
first-person puzzle games like "Talos Principle", "The Witness" and
even "Portal", except those games gate your progress behind a variety
    of puzzles.

Bonus: Any game where I can destroy a carpet by relentlessly padding at
it with my paws is okay by me.

"Stray" is a wonderfully cute game, but its appeal (I think) lies
almost entirely on the cuteness of its protagonist. Its story is
fairly humdrum, and its other characters pretty forgettable. It does
have nice some visuals and its atmosphere is pretty cool. But if you
don't like cats I think a lot of what makes this game special will
    bypass you.

Mostly, the Remastered version was an attempt to bring the console
versions up to the level of the original PC visuals, and the PC
version --which already looked great-- didn't really get much
improvement. The differences really are minute, and in the actual game

The Remastered is probably the better version to play but if you
already own the original it's not worth paying to upgrade.

I had bought the original Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite on my own.

I have since taken advantage of so many freebies that I think I have Bio,
Bio2, both remasters, Bio Infinite, and probably some other Bioshock
related game in GOG, Epic, and Steam.

Oh, that's right! I think I got the original DOS Pipe Dream game (1989)
and the WEP Pipe Dream (1991) as part of the deal*.

What Have You Been Playing... IN FEBRUARY 2025?

    * Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

I’ve never played any Call of Duty game before but, well, I saw it on
TV. Specifically, my country’s public broadcaster/ministry of propaganda/ministry of truth has a program on historical accuracy in
video games. So they actually have history profs commenting on a game’s historical accuracy while watching another guy play the game.

I noticed the game goes on sale periodically (it’s from 2020) and
setup a price watch notification on Cheapshark. It triggered recently
but unfortunately I jumped the gun and bought it on battle.net. There
was quite a lot of hoops to jump through, some were on fire. And of
course, a couple of days later it went on sale on Steam. Gah.

While I didn’t know much of CoD in general, I was delighted by the
absurdity I saw on TV and enjoyed the quick and simple action in the
game. They even put in some “variation” where in one mission I was
suddenly a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, a flashback in other words. On
another I had to steer a radio controlled car into the landing gear of
a jet plane and blow it up into a huge fireball. Oh, and this was a
*covert* operation to stop a terrorist attack. Yes, the absurdity
    entertains.

Technically, the game is good too. Installation options let you select
what content you want, I skipped the multiplayer bits and saved a few
gigs of download. Lots of options to tweak graphics otherwise
too. Couldn’t make it go above 60 fps though which is a little odd. It
even has an monitor refresh rate limit settable to 60/144/165 but that
does nothing, it sticks to 60.

Hoops to jump through on battle.net:

    - Can’t create an account with a PC browser. You get a long CAPTCHA
where your answers aren’t accepted even if right. In my case, the
CAPTCHA wasn’t even solvable 2/3 tries either.

Mobile browser works though. I assume their mobile app works as well.

    - Payment: oh, you have to authorize them to charge anything they want
    on Paypal. Lovely. Removed.

    - Another account: well, one isn’t enought, I need to have an
    Activision account too.

It’s true what Spalls says, Steam might not be good but others are
    way, way worse.

    * GTA4

I installed GTA4 some time ago, I was a little worried if I still have
access to the DLC. I have little interest in the main game but as I
recall the DLC is more fun. Turns out my old DVD release was converted
to a downloadable from Rockstar and the Games for Windows bought DLC
also came from there. I was pleasantly surprised.

I remember I played the lost and damned biker DLC a little bit back when
I installed this and started again. Turns out increasing the FPS messes
up the physics in the game and not in a fun way. Oh well, back to
plodding 60 fps. Keyboard also refuses to work in combat. When combat
starts apparently WASD doesn't means forward-left-right-back, it's more
like nothing-right-nothing-back. So pressing left goes right back goes
    back.

Thankfully, my trusty old Xbox 360 controller still works. And the game
seems to play reasonably well, I think I'll try to complete the biker
    and the other DLC.

    * Star Wars Outlaws

This went on sale with 50% off so I figured it's time. Star Wars game,
even if it sucks, is still a Star Wars game.

All I've managed so far is fumble around on the starter planet,
collecting junk for money to get a data spike fixed which would enable
some lucrative thievery. The game's ambiance is great, other than that
    it's pretty humdrum so far.

Bioshock is a game that I was hugely disappointed in although part of

    that I even pre-ordered it.

It started off well but to me it became apparent that although the
setting was interesting it really was just another shooter. The much
touted gameplay videos of setting up elaborate traps, well that's fine
but why go to all that effort when you can just shoot them in the face.

As for me, same old. I want to see if I try a Steam game (Among 3D

Sooner or later you two will end fighting in the Thunder Dome. I'm going
to need an extra-large bucket of popcorn for the occasion.

Haha, OK. A classic DOOM DM! :P~

This time I won't make a list, for a simple reason: I managed to stick
with one single game and not hop between multiple ones, and it's a
lenghty one: Pokmon Leaf Green (2004, GBA).

The remake of the international Gen I game. I have been playing it
since january, given that it is a game i can put away easily and not get hooked during the exams season. 30 minutes of playtime during the
morning commute, and a bit more during the weekends.

And boy, it feels like a chore. Despite all the QoL improvements over
the original (run button, 60fps, better pokmon storage management),
it's still an excruciating experience due to being faithful to the
original. Awful world design, slow grinding, not enough buttons, the
dreaded HMs requiring again the use of an "HM bitch"... it's made worse
by two extra details: 1) I'm not using legendaries this time, and 2) I
am staying away from the meta and using different monsters, but Nidoking
is still a required monster to make the game fair. On top of that, I
think the game is harder than the original. Less glitches, enemies can
do critical damage and status effects more often, and using Gen III
    types changes things a lot.

I just don't know why I am playing this instead of Emerald, which is the
    best GBA Pokmon.

A portable console! Get out! J/K. :) Wait, was this in the real hardware or an emulator?

    The Planet Crafter.

I've been playing this for a while. You are a prisoner dropped on an
airless rock in space with minimal tools. Terraform it or die.

Some call it a "cozy" game since in regular mode you can't actually die.
You just can get caught in a resurrection loop where you die and get
brought back to life in the same state that killed you so you die again, resurrect, repeat. Not my idea of "cozy". But that said if you're
half-way competent you can start making progress making a base, making
early terraforming machines and exploring. As you move the planet thru
the stages of terraforming you get better and more powerful machines you
can make to terraform faster and live more comfortably. There is also a mystery to solve if you want.

Its a LOT like the Subnautica games so if you liked those you will
    probably like this.

The game is actually part of a genre called "narrative games", but
often referred to as "walking sims". Key concepts include...well,
walking obviously, but games where the focus is almost entirely on
exploration with very little in the way of challenges such as combat
or puzzles (usually none of the former and very little or extremely
simplistic ones of the latter), a lot of focus on environmental
storytelling, and a strong emphasis on atmosphere.

Similar games include "Dear Esther", "Gone Home", "Everybody's Gone to
the Rapture", "35mm", "Firewatch", "Tacoma", and "The Vanishing of
Ethan Carter" (amonst many more). The genre often dovetails with
first-person puzzle games like "Talos Principle", "The Witness" and
even "Portal", except those games gate your progress behind a variety
    of puzzles.

Bonus: Any game where I can destroy a carpet by relentlessly padding at >>>> it with my paws is okay by me.

"Stray" is a wonderfully cute game, but its appeal (I think) lies
almost entirely on the cuteness of its protagonist. Its story is
fairly humdrum, and its other characters pretty forgettable. It does
have nice some visuals and its atmosphere is pretty cool. But if you
don't like cats I think a lot of what makes this game special will
    bypass you.

When will there be a Dog version? ;P

Okami is arguably a dog, and much better than a walking sim.

Well, a spirit wolf, but yeah. I LOVE that game. She's a good dog.

cozy. You can't die there either; you just respawn back at the last
    firepit. ;-)

But it got me to thinking... there really aren't MANY games left where
death has any lasting consequences. Long gone are the days when your character would snuff it and you'd have to restart the level (or, if

finally give that freaking gnome that spawned with a Wand of Death his comeuppance, since you might just remember how you died.

Rogue Legacy does a good job with it too. A long lineage of genetically deficient ancestors gradually improving the family line.

Some people truly enjoy the high stakes, but that's not a majority of

I most often see permadeath as an option in RPG games. Survival modes

Excepting Nethack, of course. One save file, deleted on death. Level
where you died is saved as "bones" to be randomly inserted into a future
game. It's awfully nice to pick up an Ascension kit from a previous run
and slay your own ghost. That's the way to do it! It's also fun to
finally give that freaking gnome that spawned with a Wand of Death his
comeuppance, since you might just remember how you died.

Rogue Legacy does a good job with it too. A long lineage of genetically
deficient ancestors gradually improving the family line.

Some people truly enjoy the high stakes, but that's not a majority of
players, so it shouldn't be by design.

I most often see permadeath as an option in RPG games. Survival modes
too. Weapon degradation is another thing that should always be optional.

The point is to have fun. If something has the potential to not be fun,
and removing it doesn't break the game, it should be optional.

I love, love, LOVE rougelikes that include things from your last runs
(tho the only thing i can think of is the deathcards from Inscryption)
but I just cannot understand Nethack.

The first rule of Nethack is you do not understand Nethack.
The second rule of Nethack is you. DO. NOT. UNDERSTAND. Nethack.

It's got a learning curve like the White Cliffs of Dover. I have managed ascension runs in most versions. The latest one is just.... mean.

Yeah, it sounds like yet-another-survival/crafting-game to me.

It is. But I like a lot of those so there! *pffffftttt*

I'm not complaining or judging. I've been known to play those games
too, and besides, anyone with hundreds upon hundreds of hours invested
into a boring truck-driving game has no right to look down upon other people's genre's-of-choice.

I do have a bit of an issue with so many survival-crafting games often feeling like simple reskins of what's popular (same way I look askance

I mean, I do personally find a lot of the 'search for rock and twigs

My wife and I went to see Captain America: Brave New World. We have a
nice small local theatre with decent prices and $5 Tuesday tickets.

It was not a particularly good movie.

Before that I saw Heart Eyes with my daughter, same place, and it was a particularly good movie! Absolutely delicious self-conscious meta slasher flick. A young couple has to prove that they have no romantic interest in
each other to fend off a slasher who kills young couples in love.

We're considering Mickey 17 next. Looks fun.

Not sure if you're serious, but the biggest flaw in the GBA was a passive
LCD display. It was to improve battery life because it took disposable batteries. Nintendo didn't release a lighted LCD handheld until GBA SP,
which introduced a rechargable. It inspired the DS.

I always thought the SP looked like crap. The original was much sleeker.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afterburner_(modification_kit)

(Huh. It's actually a front light. Who knew?)

Anyway, when I had a GBA, I wanted an Afterburner in the worst way. It
was typical for me to play in my bathroom because it was the only place
that had the most direct light onto the screen.

Its actually reaching a point where it doesn't matter if I _want_ to see

Uh, is this related to that Sega arceade game? If so, then I don't see how that is related to my web search to see what that is about.

Not sure if you're serious, but the biggest flaw in the GBA was a passive
LCD display. It was to improve battery life because it took disposable batteries. Nintendo didn't release a lighted LCD handheld until GBA SP,
which introduced a rechargable. It inspired the DS.

Yes, I was serious. Ugh, passive LCDs. Yeah, I didn't like those on
computer screens. Hence I preferred CRT back then.

Heh. Like me with my iPhone. ;P

It took a very long time before LCD monitors caught up with CRTs with
regard to gaming performance. 22 years or so ago I was still in
competitive e-sports and remember discussing with clanmates that OLED
would probably be the only solution... everything non-CRT back then
was disasterous. That's almost how long it took to get to a decent
place. I'm still not going OLED yet because I doubt I'd be happy with
text clarity, but it may get there. I'm actually more content overall
with what I have now than I've been since CRTs.. between GSYNC and
360hz on an IPS monitor (cap, I never hit that anyway at 1440p)
without old school problems like tearing I really couldn't complain.
Fast IPS monitors finally got to a point where manufacturers had their
shit together. Too bad it took nearly two and half decades to catch
up to what we had back then.

    [snip]

But even the Gameboy's competitors -like Sega's
GameGear and the Atari Jaguar- languished on the shelves partly
because they opted for better, battery-hungry screens. In almost every >respect, the GameGear was a far, far better machine than the Gameboy,
but its 6 AA batteries lasted 3 hours, compared to the 15 hours for
the two AA batteries in the Gameboy. Sure, that meant that, with the
GameBoy, you were stuck with only monochrome color, but you were
'stuck' with it for 15 times the length of time it would take to power
    a GameGear.

Yeah. Nintendo made the right choice. The GameGear had an amazing
    experience, but the backlight was too power hungry. Nintendo was right;
battery life was more important. I had a Gameboy. It lasted forever
because it was a simple, tiny, unlit LCD.

Most people don't even know what a Jaguar is, because Atari was no longer
a player in consoles. Started its plummeting decline around the 7800.

Does anyone even remember the benighted Lynx? You didn't. That was the
Gameboy contemporary, and it also made the mistake of backlighting. The
Jaguar was years later. They should have taken Nintendo's example to
    heart by that time. ;^)

I only use emulation when I can't afford the original hardware, or
another issue prevents me from using it (like being picky about
    framerate). I also can't afford a MisterFPGA.

I have a first release Sega Genesis in the basement myself. Sometimes
putting the carts in is tricky.

I'm happy with the Switch's Gameboy emulation, though. I wish I could
bring my own roms from cart dumps, but I understand why they can't do
    that.

If you take it out of the dock, you get a Gameboy with a manageable
    screen size. Limited selection though.

Cool Spot isn't emulated on Switch, and doesn't work right on original
hardware hooked up via composite video because the NTSC blur doesn't
happen (you get a series of lines instead of intended transparency. So in
that case, the only way I can get an authentic experience is through
emulation with an NTSC filter. Original hardware isn't always the best solution, or more to the point, you need *all* the original hardware,
including an RF switch in some cases.

Yes, I was serious. Ugh, passive LCDs. Yeah, I didn't like those on
computer screens. Hence I preferred CRT back then.

    [snip]

But even the Gameboy's competitors -like Sega's
GameGear and the Atari Jaguar- languished on the shelves partly
because they opted for better, battery-hungry screens. In almost every >>>> respect, the GameGear was a far, far better machine than the Gameboy,
but its 6 AA batteries lasted 3 hours, compared to the 15 hours for
the two AA batteries in the Gameboy. Sure, that meant that, with the
GameBoy, you were stuck with only monochrome color, but you were
'stuck' with it for 15 times the length of time it would take to power >>>> a GameGear.

Yeah. Nintendo made the right choice. The GameGear had an amazing
    experience, but the backlight was too power hungry. Nintendo was right;
battery life was more important. I had a Gameboy. It lasted forever
because it was a simple, tiny, unlit LCD.

Most people don't even know what a Jaguar is, because Atari was no longer >>> a player in consoles. Started its plummeting decline around the 7800.

Does anyone even remember the benighted Lynx? You didn't. That was the
Gameboy contemporary, and it also made the mistake of backlighting. The
Jaguar was years later. They should have taken Nintendo's example to
    heart by that time. ;^)

This is the end of the chain, so I suppose it will be more readable here.

I have had up to three GBAs over the years, but nowadays all I have left
is a GB Micro, and let's face it: 20 years after buying it, presbyopia
is starting to become a problem with a 2 inches screen. I am fine with >>playing those on a modded 3ds with the bare metal gba firmware, but
after Deck and Switch it's hard to go back.

And what's the point anyway; emulation has gotten so good that unless
you're a die-hard retroist or are trying to speed-runs on authentic
hardware, you might as well just use an emulator and give yourself all
the advantages thirty years of tech- and game-development offer. With
things like upscaling, save-states and better controls, it's just a
better experience to emulate it on modern hardware.

Which isn't to say I have total disdain for original hardware (anyone
looking into my study filled with old computers and gaming consoles
will be able to tell you that!) but those aren't the machines I use to actively PLAY the old games on (unless absolutely necessary). But
there's something to be said about experiencing the 'old tech' every
now and again; the loud whir of the fans, the crunky static of old sound-cards, the agony of a BSOD or having to blow on the cartridge*
    to get it to load.

But for actual play-throughs? Use an emulator.

    * don't blow on your cartridges; the moisture in your breath does them
    no favors. ;-)

It doesn't help that companies are trying to end emulation, though.

Renfield was surprisingly good. I mean, it was absolutely stupid too
but I've come to expect so little from Nicholas Cage movies that
actually enjoying one was a bit of a shock. It's odd mix of
tenderhearted romance and over-the-top gore is probably what saved it.

It's schlock, but GOOD schlock. Highly recommended (but don't bring

I did enjoy it too. I loved watching a therapist get his ass kicked. (not really, but it was very funny)

More precisely, they're trying to end emulation they don't control.
Because pretty much all the major players nowadays rely on emulation
    for their old line-up.

But regardless of what they (mostly Nintendo) want, emulation is not
going anywhere. It's been tested repeatedly in court, and so long as
no copyrighted code is used in the emulator, then they've no legal leg
to stop its distribution. And emulator developers have gotten VERY
good about clean-room recreations of hardware functions. Or at least,
they're gotten really good at dividing their code from any necessary copyrighted code (e.g., the BIOS) that the user has to provide
    themselves.

As for the games themselves, well, they've perfect right to police the distribution of those... although the cat is waaaaay out of the bag
for most of those at this point, so it seems comically pointless for
them to keep chasing it. But I can't fault them their attempts.

(well, usually. Some games are impossible to buy and keeping those out
of public use for decades seems almost malicious... but a lot of the
better known stuff still has value (as in, people will pay to play
them if the games are available) so their shutting down the torrents
(or however kids distribute the games nowadays) doesn't bother me to
    much.

Hopefully, it stays that way, especially with the spotty coverage and subscription services.
