It's on pc gamepass right now, so never having played an ES game I'll certainly take a look. Actually purchasing it, that will have to wait (it's $10 off at fanatical and other stores). I'd really like to try the earlier games first.

Despite modding not being officially supported, many old Oblvion mods
work anyways. That's because it's the same Oblivion game engine under the hood, except the graphics part has been replaced by Unreal 5. Any mod
that doesn't use the Oblivion script extender and doesn't change the
graphics files should just work. The original game didn't officially
support the script extended either, and Unreal's graphics formats aren't
a secret, so effectively support for mods isn't really different than
    in the original game.

It shouldn't be too long before someone creates a script extender
for the remastered game, and more importantly, a mod manager for it.
Any still relevant and highly popular graphics mods should get ported
over, including the all important "nude mod". Ultimately, there's nothing
much stopping modding scene from being as a big part of the remastered
game as the original. Well, other than the fact that this is still a
20 year old game and the old generation of modders that created all the
old Obvlivion mods have moved on.

I am now! So far, so great. It's been a while since I played the
original! I don't think I completed it though.

The last game I was addicted to was Elden Ring, but that was so darn
hard that I don't want to play it again or the expansion pack because
of the one save game file.

There is quick save in this one and a few save games slots so I am
    happy!!!

It is a beatiful game so far too. And runs great. I got sick of
Kingdom Come Deliverence 2 and STALKER 2 because of how long it takes
to get the darn games up and running so that I could actually play it
(and get quickly killed in S2 lol) God of War Ragnarok got so silly
that I quit playing it, at least for now.

I am glad I spent the money on the remaster. I know that I will be
playing it for quite some time to come.

Bethesda has announced in its FAQ there will be no official mod
support for the new version of Oblivion.

    https://help.bethesda.net/#en/answer/69672
Q: "Does The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered
    support mods?"
A: "Mods are not officially supported for The Elder
    Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered."

They've also indicated that modding tools won't be made available.

Despite the game selling like gangbusters, I think this might
ultimately doom this version to becoming an also-ran when compared to
the older editions. Modding is the heart-and-soul of Bethesda RPGs,
and the biggest reason to play their janky games over other, better
titles. Without mods, the game just won't have the lifespan of the
    older games.

Which might be an intended goal for Bethesda. Unless you've got a live-service implemented into a game, you WANT players to
buy-then-abandon your older titles as quickly as possible. That way
they have to buy a new game from you. Playing the same game for
ten-plus years doesn't make a publisher money, after all.

And here I thought they were just being lazy!

quickly. Maybe I should have just ignored the main quest but that's
kinda where I though the vast majority of the content was.

    That was one of the major complaints with the original "Oblivion";
there were only a limited number of assets available to the
developers, so a lot of the dungeons (and other locales) started
looking very samey. One of the major improvements with "Skyrim" was
that Bethesda created a lot of custom one-use assets to give locations
    more individuality.

I do you remember really enjoying the spooky atmosphere of the first
dungeon I encountered. After doing three of them, which were basically
the same, that excitement wore off.

Too, the level-scaling in "Oblivion" was just awful. It was literally
easier to just NOT level up your character, because then even the
end-level monsters would still be relatively weak. "Oblivion" punished
you for getting better in the game. "Skyrim" still suffered from this
a little bit, but it wasn't as extreme.

I forgot how bad that was and I kinda made it worse for myself as I just
picked skills that I liked the sound of with no real regard for whether
they were the 'correct' ones. The result was I'd fall into a character
who was underpowered compared to their actual level. I think I solved it
by just turning down the difficultly setting.

Myself, I always liked how "Gothic" did it; all the monsters were pre-levelled, and if you, as a newbie player, happened to wander into
an area that was intended for someone who had reached max-level, well
you sort of deserved what was coming to you ;-)
