This game doesn't need much introduction so let's talk
about the why. Is it because "Borderlands 4" is coming
out or because Randy Pitchford keeps getting himself in
trouble with his mouth? I think it's a little from column A,
and a little from column B. Also, this version has banned
mods and made some pretty unnecessary changes to the EULA
which fans are understandably mad about. 'Cause why let
a good thing go to waste when you can piss off the fans,
    right Randy?

But if you still just want the game, grab it before it goes un-free in
    two weeks.

I think this is the first game being given away for free that I bought
and paid for awhile back. I am guessing this has happened to you
    already. :)

Recent reviews are Overwhelmingly Negative. I am sure that has

A word of advice if you do decide to play it and have Windows 11, the

Some people have had some success with running the game in

Something about how the EULA is extremely anti-consumer, I think.

Gearbox has taken notice and commented on the issue. The primary
complaints are that they've granted themselves the right to use a lot >personal user information however they want (which is why gamers are
calling them 'spyware' now), and that the use of /any/ mods can lead
to permanent banning (US gamers also have to endure forced
    arbitration).

So Gearbox has issued a statement that even though they've got the
RIGHT to collect and use all that info, they've no intention of
actually do so... and that they've no problem with mods so long as
    they aren't used for cheating.

But rather than adjust their EULA to reflect this, they've just asked
gamers to trust them. And --especially after Pitchford's outbursts
earlier this week-- gamer's aren't having any of it. (Pitchford, of
course, also had to personally chime in on the subject, because he
doesn't know how to shut up).

Take Two is trying to hype up the release of "Borderlands 4" and yet
they keep shooting themselves in the foot. They need to gag Pitchford,
don't make any negative moves with any of your properties (like adding
nasty EULA provisions or taking shit away from players), and --at this >point-- make some serious to your players and maybe they will get some >marketing momentum back. 'Cause right now "Borderlands 4" is looking >increasingly toxic.

It's so toxic, they might as well have Britney Spears make a cameo.

I just googled Pitchford to see the hullabuloo, and read
his statement where he's trying to walk back the "real fans"
    comment:

    https://kotaku.com/borderlands-4-randy-pitchford-gearbox-80-real-fan-post-1851782855

I think Kotaku is right -- he needs to stop talking about it.

I haven't gotten all the way through BL3 yet, having set it aside
for other games -- but it's always been there to play, and having
    multiple planets appealed to me.

I liked Tiny Tina's Wonderland, especially the big event when returning
to the seafront after slaying the banshee. I thought that was really
well done. I still haven't finished TTW either, but have had plenty
of fun moments in that, as well as the BL:TPS.

Getting BL4 will depend on a few things, though, considering
    what's gone down with Gearbox:

    * Reviews

I'm talking about player reviews, not media reviews. This includes...

    * Linux compatibility

I can play all the other games on Linux. (I think BL2 may even
be Linux Native, iirc.) I don't have a bare-metal install of
Windows on this box [*], nor do I have the inclination to build
a Windows install just to play a game. It also includes...

    * Difficulty level

I won't play games that are tough just to be tough. Heck, taking
on the banshee in TTW was tough for a casual gamer like me -- in
fact, I think I died right when I finally got her. As long as there
is interesting content to play through to level-up, I'm happy.

[*] I have Windows 11 Pro for Workstations installed in a libvirt
qemu virtual machine, but that's not for games.

Works for me. The first time I launched it just now it didn't run,
but it worked the second time I tried it. The intro videos appeared
in a tiny window in the upper left corner of my screen, but after they
    finished the game worked normally.

That already happened, plus it didn't follow any of the "vault hunter"
mythos of the games, greedy treasure seeker OR superhero-activist.

Didn't they make them bounty hunters chasing after Tina who is suddenly
not a homicidal orphan but the runaway daughter of some CEO of an
    intergalactic weapons manufacturer?

Gee they alienated the only audience they had, people who played the
games, no wonder they only pulled in 33 mil vs a budget of 110 mil.

Might as well have had Uwe Boll direct it, he couldn't have made it

Personally, I think you're better off starting with the second. The
story/setting is extremely simplistic in these games, so you don't
really need to start from the first, and B2 added various QOL
refinements that just made it a better experience (assuming you liked
the gameplay, obviously). BL1 is only for die-hard fans and weirdos
who like playing games for their historical value ;-)

and prefer a villain who isn't a retarded ass monkey.
and want a story that wasn't written by one.
and prefer better weapons (remember explosive submachine guns?)
BL2+ explosive (torgue) weapons are only slow as hell firing pistols,
marginally faster shotguns and rifles and rocket launchers.

when the hell did vault hunter (treasure seeker) become "savior of us
    all" and why?

BL1 vault hunters are just that, people who came to the planet to find
and open a vault and became rich as fuck.
They aren't celebrities, superheros or activists, they're the equivalent >>> of those guys hunting sunken ships or pirate treasure - motivated by
    greed.

What's next, a GTA game where the criminal protagonist gets elected
    Pope?

No, a Borderlands movie. *evil grin*

    That already happened, plus

    Yes, I know. :)

it didn't follow any of the "vault hunter"
mythos of the games, greedy treasure seeker OR superhero-activist.

Didn't they make them bounty hunters chasing after Tina who is suddenly
not a homicidal orphan but the runaway daughter of some CEO of an intergalactic weapons manufacturer?

Gee they alienated the only audience they had, people who played the
games, no wonder they only pulled in 33 mil vs a budget of 110 mil.

Might as well have had Uwe Boll direct it, he couldn't have made it
    worse.

But he would have made it cheaper.

A word of advice if you do decide to play it and have Windows 11, the
GOTY Enhanced version will not run.

Some people have had some success with running the game in
compatibility mode. If you run the game straight from the .exe in compatibility mode, the game will work, but not save to Steam.

Well that sucks. Does it work on WiNE?

Works for me. The first time I launched it just now it didn't run,
but it worked the second time I tried it. The intro videos appeared
in a tiny window in the upper left corner of my screen, but after they >finished the game worked normally.

I wish it worked for me.

I get "initialisation error" if I'm lucky. Sometimes just nothing at
all. It's a common problem with the GOTY Enhanced version of BL with
    Windows 11.

I can run the game directly from the .exe file and it will start just
fine. It's hit and miss as to whether my progress is saved though.

This is still my favorite Borderlands game. Although BL2 is also
extremely good. I really didn't like BL2 when it first came out as it
seemed so different from BL1. The weapons were very different which I
    found quite off putting.

It did grow on me though over the years. I recently replayed it and
ended up having a greater appreciation of it.

I sunk quite a few hours into BL:1 even though it wasn't in my category
of this is a great game but instead I found it a rather fun and easy
going. BL:2 I just didn't get on with. I'm not sure if I was missing a
trick but boy did I get annoyed quickly with clearing out a path to the 'objective' and then finding when I died and had to pretty much go
through it all again. I just don't remember BL:1 being like that.

If you like the Telltale games format there's also Tales from the
Borderlands* which I really enjoyed. It was a shame that the sequel was
given to Gearbox who totally botched it.

*As a word of warning the reviews on Steam look bad but I believe this
is to do with the new EULA/ToS which I'm not even sure applies to it.
The same happened over BL:3 being an Epic exclusive even though it was a totally different developer.
