That's why I play Fallout 2 instead of DOOM.

This may be why I played a crapton of Fallout 76, Fallout NV etc but
never got into Fallout 2? :)

It's not that I don't appreciate story development, I just think books
and movies do it better. Games bring.. well... gameplay... which
other forms of entertainment don't do better.

    It's really that simple.

I do appreciate that some folks would like to combine both, I
personally think that doesn't work out well MOST of the time but
    that's subjective.

For me (and unlike Spalls... ha!), I simply have hobbies, interests
and a life outside of gaming. I'm thankful that gaming isn't my whole
life as that would be a little bit pathetic.

But the bottom line is, as a busy person with lots of interests that
includes but is not limited to games, it is important to me to find
games that are still fun even if I opt out of the story.

The main reason is that I either need to be able to jump into a few
multiplayer sessions, dipping out and in as needed, OR I need a single
player game that I can put down and pick back up after a few weeks or
months, in some cases years and resume. If I do that with games that
require deep story involvement, I'm never going to be interested in
    picking it back up.

This is why in many games I just spacebar or skip or whatever through
the character dialog. I don't need to "get involved" with animated
virtual characters to the point I'm really interested in them. I need
a game I can put down and pick up later... maybe much later... and be
able to connect with it quickly and it still be fun.

Yes, there are games I've spent shameful amounts of time with. Even
where I am with Tainted Grail... It's embarrasing but I've probably
already got 30 hours into it. Maybe I'll finish it or maybe not, but
at least I know I won't have to re-research lore, characters and plot
and whatever in order to enjoy it again if I choose to put it down and
pick it up a year from now.
