Who was Imam Ghazali?
Imam Ghazali was a Persian Sunni Muslim scholar who lived from 1058 to 1111 CE. He was born in Tus, a town in Iran, and studied under the famous theologian al-Juwayni in Nishapur. He became a renowned professor of Islamic sciences at the Nizamiyya
college in Baghdad, where he taught more than 300 students. He was also a trusted advisor of the Seljuk vizier Nizam al-Mulk, who appointed him as the chief jurist of the Seljuk empire.
However, Imam Ghazali was not satisfied with his worldly success and fame. He felt a spiritual crisis that made him question his faith and knowledge. He decided to leave his prestigious position and embark on a journey of seeking the truth. He traveled
to various places, such as Damascus, Jerusalem, and Mecca, and devoted himself to studying Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam. He also wrote many books during this period, such as The Deliverer from Error (al-Munqidh min al-Dalal), The Alchemy of
Happiness (Kimiya-yi Sa'adat), and The Niche for Lights (Mishkat al-Anwar).
Imam Ghazali returned to teaching in 1106 at the request of his friends and students. He taught at the Nizamiyya college in Nishapur until his death in 1111. He was buried in his hometown of Tus, where his mausoleum still stands today.
Why is Imam Ghazali important?
Imam Ghazali is important for many reasons. He is considered to be one of the greatest Muslim thinkers and reformers of all time. He is also known as the Proof of Islam (Hujjat al-Islam) and the Renewer of the Faith (Mujaddid) for his contributions to
Islamic theology, law, philosophy, and spirituality.
Imam Ghazali is famous for his critique of the rationalist philosophers, such as al-Farabi and Avicenna, who tried to harmonize Greek philosophy with Islamic revelation. He wrote The Incoherence of the Philosophers (Tahafut al-Falasifa), where he exposed
the contradictions and errors of their arguments. He also wrote The Aims of the Philosophers (Maqasid al-Falasifa), where he summarized their views and showed their limitations. He argued that reason alone cannot lead to certain knowledge or happiness,
and that one needs revelation and faith to attain them.
Imam Ghazali is also famous for his synthesis of Islamic orthodoxy and Sufism. He wrote The Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya Ulum al-Din), which is a comprehensive manual of Islamic ethics, worship, and spirituality. He divided the book into four
parts: acts of worship, norms of daily life, ways to perdition, and ways to salvation. He explained the inner and outer dimensions of each topic, using both legal and mystical sources. He aimed to revive the authentic spirit of Islam and to guide Muslims
to a balanced and moderate way of life.
Imam Ghazali's works have influenced many Muslim scholars and thinkers throughout history, such as Ibn Rushd, Ibn Tufayl, Ibn Arabi, Maimonides, Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, al-Nawawi, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Khaldun, Shah Wali Allah, Muhammad Iqbal, and many others.
His works have also been translated into many languages and have attracted the attention of Western scholars and philosophers.
