    Of course. Niggly details: encryption?

    I take it you want to do this *without* using Migration Assistant?

    It's just a few files and didn't occur to me to that I needed a whole
    migration process.

    you don't. time machine backups are finder readable so you can connect
    the drive and find the relevant files, or tell time machine about the
    drive and use its ui.

    You don't need Migration Assistant just to recover a few files. You can
    mount the volume on the Mac, then navigate to the folder within the
    "latest" backup to copy whatever you need. It should be pretty straight-forward.

    You don´t. Just plug it in and copy the files you need via the finder.

    It's a common TLA for "in any case".

    Let's ask ChatGTP...

    Result {{{

    Yes, you can restore Time Machine backups from a portable hard drive to
    a different computer. Here are the steps you can follow:

    - Connect the portable hard drive to Computer "B".
    - Open Time Machine on Computer "B".
    - Locate the backup you want to restore from on the portable hard drive.
    - Use Time Machine to restore the files and folders you need to Computer
    "B".

    Please note that restoring Time Machine backups from a different
    computer may have some limitations or issues, such as missing files or compatibility issues. It's recommended to check the Apple's official documentation for more information. }}}

    I'll score that a C. It left out issues such as passwords/encryption,
    and punted with the "check apple docs" out.
