Apple Can't Build AI, So It's Reportedly Asking Google Gemini to Power Siri https://gizmodo.com/apple-cant-build-ai-asking-google-gemini-power-siri-1851343967

Apple is struggling to build its version of ChatGPT, so it's asking AI competitors to power the next version of Siri.

The iPhone maker reportedly held discussions with multiple AI companies
about powering iOS 18 with a competitor's technology, including OpenAI.

Apple is under intense pressure to come up with some jaw-dropping AI
features, proving that Apple is not falling behind in the next wave of technology.

The company scrapped plans for the Apple Car last month, marking the end of
a decade-long project that was supposed to inject new growth into Apple.

Headline is pretty good as clickbait goes.

Certainly Apple had their focus elsewhere and have been caught "out" on
AI in the sense of general models like ChatGPT and similar.

But to say Apple "can't build AI" is pretty silly. Their problem is
time and delivery to market - "they don't have the time to reach parity quickly" is a more accurate statement of what's going on.

Apple is very advanced in other "AI" related areas, notably machine
learning, data fusion, image processing and so on. (As Vision Pro
clearly illustrates - it is leaps and bounds ahead of everything else).

An unknown is how much of their now terminated automobile project's AI development is re-purposeable to more general AI. Chunks of it at least.

Finally, teaming with Google's Gemini project isn't exactly a bad
decision. Google of course would like all that Google Search cash to
flow back the other way. There are other suitors too.

I think you’ll find that’s someone else ;) He’s probably got an even longer
    list! Is there one?

David Brooks may be a problem to many, but David Brooks is not Arlen.

Arlen isn’t nearly as bad as Our David.

He has multiple socks, usually with BD or DB or BDB or David B in there somewhere, but sometimes with Hunter or Hawker or Hawker Hunter (he says that he flew Hawker Hunter fighters when he was in the Royal Navy. Thst’s
_Navy_, not Air Force.) or Bawdy (his alleged callsign when flying the
alleged Hunters) often with 14 or 88 or something similar (yes, he has a certain, ahem, point of view, matching the point on his head; look up those
who like 14 or 88 or 1488. Hint: what’s the 8th letter of the alphabet? And seehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourteen_Words for more.) He has been known
to use other socks, but not for very long. One talk.origins there was a
thread where he made at least seven posts, using three socks, in under 24 hours. (Yes, he’s a creationist. He’s on a Mission From God.)

I won’t go into the more repellant parts of his personality.
