    I think you want to install simplescreenrecorder.

    I've never knew spectacle to be able to do that.

    Spectacle is supposed to be able to do it. It's been a feature for about
    a year now. I thought it should "just work" but apparently not. I'm not
    looking for other solutions right now, but thanks for the suggestion.

    Further to below, I note that simple screen recorder doesn't work with
    Wayland while Spectacle doesn't work with X11. I've been using Wayland
    for a few days now, and don't see any reason to revert to X11 so far. I
    guess I'll just have to wait for Spectacle to be fixed.  :(
