• DO NOT UPGRADE KMOD to 33+20240816-1

From Diederik de Haas@21:1/5 to All on Mon Aug 19 11:54:35 2024
Why report this to the KDE mailing list?

Because yesterday I had what looks like a *partial* upgrade of KDE packages, and saw some 'funny' things* (which is ofc expected in Sid from time to time). So today I upgraded again and wanted to reboot immediately after that.
Then I noticed the following line/error:

/usr/lib/dracut/dracut-install: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/dracut/dracut-install: undefined symbol: kmod_module_get_weakdeps, version LIBKMOD_5

Luckily I decided to investigate/report this problem before I rebooted ...
as through bug #1079022 and #1079031 I learned of people having unbootable systems as a bug in kmod made my initramfs shrink from 37M to 9.5M!

So do NOT upgrade to kmod 33+20240816-1

If you already did downgrade kmod to the Testing version via (f.e.):

    aptitude install kmod/testing libkmod2/testing

And then hold kmod to that version (32+20240611-1)

    Cheers,
    Diederik

Note that I do NOT have any KDE (related) packages installed from
Experimental, which (IIUC) is what Aurélien's message is about.

My Dolphin icon is still black (instead of blue), but the (other)
'funny' things I did see are now fixed.
So AFAICT the (whole) bunch of libkf6* packages that (also) got
installed with today's Sid upgrade appear to be fine.

    HTH,
    Diederik

Yes, the kmod maintainer already said that here: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug79022#10

Would've been nice if some coordination would've happened that would
have rebuilt dracut-install upon/before uploading. But that didn't
happen, so warning others seemed like the next best thing.

    Getting WEIRD.

    https://bugs.debian.org/1079022#106

Bit off topic here, but still:

    apt-listbugs to the rescue:

    /etc/apt/preferences.d/apt-listbugs:

    Explanation: Pinned by apt-listbugs at 2024-08-20 10:20:32 +0200
Explanation: #1079022: kmod: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/dracut/dracut-install: undefined symbol: kmod_module_get_weakdeps, version LIBKMOD_5
Explanation: #1079035: kmod: latest upgrade break system startup
    Package: libkmod2
    Pin: version 32+20240611-1
    Pin-Priority: 30000

First I verified that it seems to also affect initramfs-tools which I use.

Now whatever the discussion about the bug, this pinning is only removed
by apt-listbugs once the bug has been marked as fixed.

Again, apt-listbugs only helps when there is a bug with severity of at
least "serious". So no guarantee. But it saved me a lot of hassle often
enough that I bear with the additional time it can take to retrieve bug
report information. Waiting a few seconds to up to a minute or so is
way less amount of time than fixing up things after a breakage.

I restarted sddm and so far everything is working except for the black icon for Dolphin.

Xanmod Kernel was also updated and initramfs-tools ran smoothly. dracut-install version is 103-1.1

Will my Sid boot or should I wait with a reboot?

Consider installing apt-listbugs, it will not only tell you what these
emails do but also tell you when the bug is fixed.

apt-listbugs has removed the pinning regarding the bug today. It does so
when a bug is closed. Wanted to write earlier, but then forgot.

I took the plunge, upgraded and rebooted.

    It worked. :)

In general this means that either the bug has been fixed or you pinned the package and it's still pinned (and it will be no longer pinned after the apt-listbugs cronjob finds that the bug has been fixed). In this case the
bug was indeed fixed (it's also always a good idea to double-check the bug itself if you are worried whether it's actually safe to upgrade.
