• trixie, kde, wayland: session-management not working.

    From M G Berberich@21:1/5 to All on Mon Jun 16 12:20:01 2025
    Hello,

    I decided to give wayland a chance again. It does not work.

    Session-management is broken. KDE tries to restore the last session,
    but opens all windows (from 10 virtual desktops) on one virtual
    desktop. This make it totally useless.

    Is this only me or does it not work generally?

    Minor issues are, that on logging out konsole asks for confirmation to
    close and sddm running in wayland prevents hibernation.

    The last one is especially bad for laptops which are prone to beeing
    accessed unauthorised ore stolen, etc…, as sddm only offers sleep and
    in sleep the disk is encrypted.

    I have to agree. Whilst great strides are being made with Wayland, it
    is far from 'production ready' IMO.

    I don't agree, it depends on your "production".
    Mine involves multiscreen setups with various refresh rates and pixel densities and you wouldn't convince me to switch back to X11 and all its flaws.

    So yes, for now I'm living with sub-par session management.

    As the saying goes;

    One man's meat is another man's poison.

    FTR upstream does know about this issue and they track the remaining missing Wayland features extensively here :
    <https://community.kde.org/Plasma/Wayland_Known_Significant_Issues>

    As you will see not everything is purely in KDE's hands and they are working on evolving the Wayland protocols and working with various other projects where needed.

    My apologies; It was not my intention to apportion blame in any way.

    Yes no worries it wasn't taken like that.

    I meant it as a reminder to everyone reading that the problems in question are known and acknowledged, complex and being addressed.
