There is a link in the upper right corner of the URL in the previous email named:

“Generate and manage 3rd party app passwords”

Basically, it is a special password generated by Yahoo (you don’t get to choose what it is) that will work with one client for POP (each POP client needs a separate app password). For security reasons, they do not allow you to use the website password for POP.

To expand a bit on this answer, the app password is basically designed to provide some security in case it gets compromised (I think some mail servers still communicate in plaintext) - basically it prevents an attacker from taking over your account.
