• Bookworm: Juk 22.04.1 broken?

From local10@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jul 16 01:10:01 2022
    Hi,

Juk v22.04.1 seems to hang for me. Tried the following but couldn't resolve the issue.

    Any ideas? Thanks

    1. mv ~/.config/juk ~/.config/juk.old
    2. mv ~/.local/share/juk ~/.local/share/juk.old
    3. Open juk
    4. Use Ctrl+D to add a directory with about 20 audio files
    5. Juk seems to hang, CPU utilization goes to 50%
    6. Open the same dir as in the step 4 in vlc, vlc opens the dir and plays the audio file in it without any issues

    # aptitude show juk
    Package: juk
    Version: 4:22.04.1-1
    State: installed

Operating System: Debian 12 Bookworm GNU/Linux
    KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.5
    KDE Frameworks Version: 5.94.0
    Qt Version: 5.15.4
    Kernel Version: 5.18.0-2-amd64 (64-bit)

Juk v22.04.1 doesn't seems to work for me. Tried the following but couldn't resolve the issue.

    Any ideas? Thanks

    1. mv ~/.config/jukrc ~/.config/jukrc.old> 2. mv ~/.local/share/juk ~/.local/share/juk.old
    3. Open juk
    4. Use Ctrl+D to add a directory with about 10 audio files.
    5. Juk adds the directory, shows its name in the "Collection List" pane but fails to show any audio files in the right pane, where they are normally shown.
    6. Doing a RMB click on the directory and selecting "Reload" seems to have no effect, no audio files are loaded.

    # aptitude show juk

Any feedback? Is just me and Juk 22.04.1 is working for everyone else? The description above was updated a bit to reflect the current state of my Juk efforts.

    Thanks

    Thanks

    I can not reproduce.
Are there some errors if you start it in konsole?

No errors and/or exceptions are reported when starting Juk from the konsole: it starts and behaves as I described in my previous message, that is, shows the directory but doesn't show any files.

Are there any Juk config settings besides the following?
      1. ~/.config/jukrc
      2. ~/.local/share/juk

    Thanks

I gave up on juk and installed elisa ... didn't feel like debuging.  Juk would just hang and not show anything.  I used strace and ran from the console but I didn't see anything obvious. I am running testing.

TLDR: poor interface + change of behavior in 22.04 + user error

Anyway, I've figured out what happened. When Juk starts for the first time (or after a crash) it opens the "Folder List" window that allows to specified the folders where one keeps his audio files and also the folders that should be excluded. The user's
home folder (e.g, /home/luser ) is added by default as the folder to be searched for audio files and if one mistakenly clicks "OK" then Juk would start browsing through the home dir like crazy, adding all audio files it could find, almost hanging the
system if one has a lot of files.

To prevent this, I would add my home dir to the list of folders to be excluded from search and then would add all audio folders manually and  that was working fine, until the version 22.04.

In 22.04, Juk allows to add a folder to be played but doesn't allow to load any files if they are located under one of the folders that are to be excluded. Of cause, no error message or any indication is given about what went wrong.

    Thanks to everyone who responded.

Elisa looks good but also immediately starts scanning for audio files and it appears there's no way to stop the scan. It puzzles me why the devs think it's a good idea. I definitely don't want all of my audio files to be imported into a mp3 player I use.

    Anyhow, thanks for the tip.
