• Bug#1100895: linux-image-6.1.0-32-amd64: Failed to start systemd-journa

From zebonaut@21:1/5 to All on Thu Mar 20 09:40:01 2025
    XPost: linux.debian.kernel

    Package: src:linux
    Version: 6.1.129-1
    Severity: normal
    X-Debbugs-Cc: zb-public@mnet-online.de

    Dear Maintainer,

after a fresh installation from a netinst usb flash drive, version debian-12.5.0-amd64-netinst.iso,
the system did not boot because it went into a loop that repeatedly failed to start job
    systemd-journald.service.

I managed to eventually boot the system by telling grub not to boot using linux-image-6.1.0-32-amd64 (default) but
    linux-image-6.1.0-18-amd64 (chosen manually),
which was the second choice still available in grub's start-up menu.

I am aware that the kernel may not be the package that is the actual root cause. However, I chose
linux-image-6.1.0-32-amd64 as the affected package because choosing an older version made the
    problem disappear.

I believe this "fix" was available because my netinst iso was already a bit older and during the
installation, a newer kernel version was installed and used as a default by grub.

When re-installing from a new netinst image (debian-12.10.0-amd64-netinst.iso), linux-image-6.1.0-32-amd64 was the only option available to grub, and I could not use
an alternative version to start the system.

This was displayed during the boot process:

    [ *** ] Job systemd-journald.service/start running (1min 19s / 1min 19s)
    [ *** ] Job systemd-journald.service/start running (2min 49s / 2min 49s)
    [ 189.455547] systemd [1]: systemd-journald.service: State 'stop-sigterm' timed out. Killing.

This continued in a loop-like fashion until it repeatedly [FAILED]:

[FAILED] Failed to start systemd-journald.service/start - Journal Service.

When re-installing from a new netinst image (debian-12.10.0-amd64-netinst.iso),
linux-image-6.1.0-32-amd64 was the only option available to grub, and I could not use
an alternative version to start the system.

This was displayed during the boot process:

    [ *** ] Job systemd-journald.service/start running (1min 19s / 1min 19s)
    [ *** ] Job systemd-journald.service/start running (2min 49s / 2min 49s)
    [ 189.455547] systemd [1]: systemd-journald.service: State 'stop-sigterm' timed out. Killing.

This continued in a loop-like fashion until it repeatedly [FAILED]:

[FAILED] Failed to start systemd-journald.service/start - Journal Service.

    Two questions:

    - Can you please post the kernel log/dmesg from a boot with 6.1.129-1?
If the system is not accessible, we might be lucky getting some
    information by using the netconsole[1].

    [1]: <https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/networking/netconsole.html#netconsole

    - Since you have a known working Debian revision, and a bad one, can
you bisect first the Debian revisions to find the one which
introduces the problem? Once that is done we might need you to
bisect the upstream versions between those, but let's first try to
determine n which Debian revision the problem appears.

    Regards,
    Salvatore

    Dear Salvatore,

trying my best to provide appropriate pieces of information (I'm an
electronics person, not a software developer).

I tried kernel versions available via apt in debian 12.

Up to -26, I was able to boot. With -28 and higher, the boot process
    failed.

    linux-image-6.1.0-18-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-20-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-21-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-23-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-26-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-28-amd64 FAIL
    linux-image-6.1.0-29-amd64 FAIL
    linux-image-6.1.0-30-amd64 FAIL
    linux-image-6.1.0-31-amd64 FAIL
    linux-image-6.1.0-32-amd64 FAIL

Other than choosing the kernel versions (as listed above) using grub,
nothing was changed; all was done on the same machine using the same installation.

I'll now try to provide logs from booting with -26 and -28. (linux-image-6.1.0-27... was not in aptitude's list of available
    versions of this package.)

The dmesg output of the last successful boot using -26 is:

    Hi,

    On Thu, Mar 20, 2025 at 11:53:16PM +0100, zb-public@mnet-online.de wrote:
    Dear Salvatore,

trying my best to provide appropriate pieces of information (I'm an electronics person, not a software developer).

I tried kernel versions available via apt in debian 12.

Up to -26, I was able to boot. With -28 and higher, the boot process
    failed.

    linux-image-6.1.0-18-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-20-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-21-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-23-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-26-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-28-amd64 FAIL
    linux-image-6.1.0-29-amd64 FAIL
    linux-image-6.1.0-30-amd64 FAIL
    linux-image-6.1.0-31-amd64 FAIL
    linux-image-6.1.0-32-amd64 FAIL

Other than choosing the kernel versions (as listed above) using grub,
nothing was changed; all was done on the same machine using the same installation.

I'll now try to provide logs from booting with -26 and -28. (linux-image-6.1.0-27... was not in aptitude's list of available
    versions of this package.)

Yes -27 ABI is not directly anymore in the archive, but you can fetch
it from the snapshots service: https://snapshot.debian.org/binary/linux-image-6.1.0-27-amd64/
Can you check this as well so that we can narrow down even more the
    versions of OK and FAIL's?

The dmesg output of the last successful boot using -26 is:

    XPost: linux.debian.kernel

    Dear Salvatore,

I will try my best to gather the boot log from a (failing) boot into
kernel version 6.1.0-28. I will get back on this as soon as I can.

In the meantime, I am happy to report I was able to add -27 to the list
of the versions I tried so far, which resulted in an "OK", so the cause
might have to do with any changes that happened between -27 and -28. I
hope this helps to narrow down the number of possible issues.

    linux-image-6.1.0-18-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-20-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-21-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-23-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-26-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-27-amd64 OK
    linux-image-6.1.0-28-amd64 FAIL
    linux-image-6.1.0-29-amd64 FAIL
    linux-image-6.1.0-30-amd64 FAIL
    linux-image-6.1.0-31-amd64 FAIL
    linux-image-6.1.0-32-amd64 FAIL

Just in case this helps to catch possible errors (becaue I am really
more of an interested user than a developer), I add the details of what
    I did:

    Downloaded https://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian/20241102T151100Z/pool/main/l/linux-signed-amd64/linux-image-6.1.0-27-amd64_6.1.115-1_amd64.deb
    (https://snapshot.debian.org/package/linux-signed-amd64/6.1.115%2B1/#linux-image-6.1.0-27-amd64_6.1.115-1)
    to
    /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-6.1.0-27-amd64_6.1.115-1_amd64.deb

    Installed using
    # apt install /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-6.1.0-27-amd64_6.1.115-1_amd64.deb
    without any error messages.

-27 was automatically added to the list grub shows during boot, and,
obviously, I chose -27 manually using grub's menu.

    Kind regards

... and, of course, thank you very kindly for walking me through this

<p>Dear Salvatore,<br /><br />I will try my best to gather the boot log from a (failing) boot into kernel version 6.1.0-28. I will get back on this as soon as I can.<br /><br />In the meantime, I am happy to report I was able to add -27 to the list of
the versions I tried so far, which resulted in an "OK", so the cause might have to do with any changes that happened between -27 and -28. I hope this helps to narrow down the number of possible issues.<br /><br />linux-image-6.1.0-18-amd64 OK<br />linux-
    image-6.1.0-20-amd64 OK<br />linux-image-6.1.0-21-amd64 OK<br />linux-image-6.1.0-23-amd64 OK<br />linux-image-6.1.0-26-amd64 OK<br />linux-image-6.1.0-27-amd64 OK<br />linux-image-6.1.0-28-amd64 FAIL<br />linux-image-6.1.0-29-amd64 FAIL<br />linux-image-
6.1.0-30-amd64 FAIL<br />linux-image-6.1.0-31-amd64 FAIL<br />linux-image-6.1.0-32-amd64 FAIL<br /><br />Just in case this helps to catch possible errors (becaue I am really more of an interested user than a developer), I add the details of what I did:<
    br /><br />Downloaded<br />https://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian/20241102T151100Z/pool/main/l/linux-signed-amd64/linux-image-6.1.0-27-amd64_6.1.115-1_amd64.deb<br />(https://snapshot.debian.org/package/linux-signed-amd64/6.1.115%2B1/#linux-image-6.1.
    0-27-amd64_6.1.115-1)<br />to<br />/var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-6.1.0-27-amd64_6.1.115-1_amd64.deb<br /><br />Installed using<br /># apt install /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-6.1.0-27-amd64_6.1.115-1_amd64.deb<br />without any error messages.
<br /><br />-27 was automatically added to the list grub shows during boot, and, obviously, I chose -27 manually using grub's menu.<br /><br />Kind regards</p>
<p>... and, of course, thank you very kindly for walking me through this process of gathering as much useful information as I can,</p>
