Dear developers,

Greetings from a chilly London 💂… The revelry has not started here yet
but a Happy New Year from myself to all Debian developers, contributors
and users.

December was another busy month spent in the depths of the DPL inbox
with well over 100 emails sent. No doubt Debian Developers will be aware
of some currently on-going big issues which — as they are changing so
rapidly — I will refrain from commenting on here, sticking to "business"
with the usual overview of what I've been getting up to as your Project
Leader during the past month:

* Represented Debian at the Paris Open Source Summit [0] presenting a
session entitled "Debian: Past, Present & Future". It was good to
see so many fellow Developers at this event as well as the vibrant
and active Debian community booth; thank you to all those who helped
make this happen.

* Further assistance in setting up a potential Bug Squashing Party [1]
as part of the foss-north [2] conference in Gothenburg, Sweden in
April 2019 to be announced shortly.

* Provided the Free Software Foundation Europe [3] with a "Debian"
quote to aid their fundraising campaign.

* Fielded more questions and queries about the "Commons Clause" [4]
license, the Server Side Public License [5] as well had a number of
conference calls on a unrelated trademark issue. In addition, the
DPL was briefly contacted regarding the recent LLVM relicensing [6]
and was also consulted on a EU GDPR [7] request with the Debian Data
Protection team [8].

* Assisted a Debian Developer by writing, printing and signing a
recommendation letter for an immigration application.

* Followed-up on progress regarding potential new "Member Benefits"
[9] and ensured that some previously-promised reports for events
funded by Debian ended up appearing on Planet [10].

I also provided solicited (!) advice to a few other developers on
conference booths and suitable/alternative conferences they may
wish to attend instead.

* Redirected the usual requests for private support, including an
explicit request for GPL-licensed source code and also responded to
a number of responses to my previous "Bits from the DPL".

On the finance side of things:

* In DebConf funding, I approved a request for a DebConf19 [11] local
team sprint as well as a related request for two developers to
perform some prelimary research into DebConf20 [12] venues. In
addition, I helped chase some missing sponsor funds from
DebConf17 [13].

* Acted a central contact point connecting the various parties
involved in receiving a significant donation to Debian from their
Open Source office [14].

Thank you in particular to Cat Allman for making this happen. :)

* For the Debian Ports initiative [15] I approved a request to replace
a motherboard in an "ia64" buildd and a power supply in one of the
"alpha" buildds.

* Finally resolved a long-standing issue regarding Debian's Linux
Weekly News [16] subscription.

* Approved funding for a DebianMed [17] sprint that will take place in
March 2019 in in Vilnius, Lithuania [18].

* For the Video Team I authorised funding for a DebConf Video [19]
team sprint [20] as part of FOSDEM in February [21] as well as a
approved purchases to refresh the audio hardware.

* Significant back-and-forths regarding reimbursing contributors to
attend Debutsav Kochi [22] last month and some post-event
administration regarding the recent Reproducible Builds summit [23]
in Paris.

* Declared some requirements under which BSP-like funding (see below)
could be employed for the upcoming SnowCamp [24] event. I also acted
as a gateway regarding a donation of some armel/armhf
buildd hardware.

in Brussels on the 2nd → 3rd February for FOSDEM [31] and CopyleftConf

Protection and Democracy [34] events.)

(If there are no Bug Squashing Parties (BSP) planned near you, please do consider organising one [35][36]. Debian is willing to reimburse the
equivalent of 100 USD to attend BSPs [37].)

Debian Desktop subproject [41] issued a call for votes for the

announced the fourth alpha prior to the release of Buster.
