I’ve identified a package I personally relate to — e3, the minimal terminal
text editor. According to the Debian WNPP listings, it has been orphaned
for over 3,200 days and is currently maintained only by the Debian QA Group.

Since I use terminal editors like nano daily, I believe e3 would be a meaningful and manageable starting point as I learn Debian packaging. I’ve already downloaded its source code and begun exploring the packaging files and build process.

I would be very grateful for any advice, mentorship, or suggestions on how
I might gradually co-maintain or adopt this package.

Since this package currently has no maintainer, it’s up for grabs.

I suggest turning the O bug into an ITA (Intent To Adopt) one, so people
with an interest in it know of your project to take over its
maintenance. In the same e-mail, you could explain basically that this
is your first try at packaging, as it could motivate some people to come
    and help you.

Keeping the current list (debian-mentors@lists.debian.org) in copy of
this ITA mail is yet another good way to find people who can find time
an energy to provide some guidance.

In addition to the mailing list, I very strongly recommend joining the #debian-mentors IRC channel (on the OFTC network), and start reading the documentation that is listed in this channel topic. It should give you
enough information to start with Debian packaging, and anything that is
still not clear you can ask in the IRC channel or on the mailing list.
