    Hello,
There seems to be some issues with the 'ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2' and some operating systems that are based on Debian. I am not sure if this is the correct place to let a developer know but I have tried using the 'ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2' with both
Linux Mint and MXLinux and had the same issues with both. As they are both based on Debian I thought the issue should be raised here. Issues are-

    - Ethernet connection through the dock runs slow and then turns on and off.

    - Hdmi connection through the dock gives colour issues on screen, everything is darker than normal.

There is more details about the issue on the linux mint forum here- https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=411140

but there is no real solution.

Which laptop are you using? Lenovo report various firmware updates to cope
    with various docks.

Strictly, this list can't really support other Debian-based OS. You probably need to report this to them. I suspect that Debian including non-free-firmware might help things work on Debian.

All the very best, as ever,

    Andy Cater
    (amacater@debian.org)

I believed in time the issue might be solved with kernal updates but the dock remains broken for some Linux users.Thanks.

In order to get your problem on topic for this mailing list, consider
to test whether it exists on real Debian. I guess that a try with a
Debian Live ISO would be convincing on the first hand.

Live ISOs for 64 bit x86 machines are at
    https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/
If you are unsure which variation to take, i propose
    https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/debian-live-12.6.0-amd64-xfce.iso
(Note: "standard" is without graphical desktop, which explains its
    appealing size).

Next question is whether anybody here or elsewhere at Debian has an idea
how to diagnose the problems you have.

the dock remains broken for some Linux users.

Bringing us back to the edge of being off-topic:
Do you get better results with any other GNU/Linux system ?
Many distros offer ISOs with enough functionality to test the system
    without installation.
If you find a system which works better and does this by help of free
software, then some Debian devoloper might be interested in getting
    this solution into Debian.

(This is not the developers list. Some of them are watching us, though.)

    Have a nice day :)

    Thomas

    Hi there.

Apologies for replying with out any useful information.

In the work place I had used docking stations for dual monitors, networks, to virtual desktops, and they seemed to work great.

So at home I tried to use a StarTech USB-C docking station with my Debian laptop. I had stability (connection like) issues where the network would not remain connected, cutting in and out. I think there were monitor issues too. I tested the docking
station on a Windows 11 PC of similar brand and model, same issues kept happening. I concluded that the pain was not worth it, and stopped using docking stations. If I had more money, I would try other brands, but doubting whether I would get success,
I decided not to pursue the issue further.

I would be curious how many people in this email list are using docking stations with 100% reliability and success (and then what brand these the working ones are)?

I hope you get to find a working solution.

After researching the 'ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2' online, I see that other people also report issues. Since the number of reports I found were few, I guess other people have success with the device?

    Hello George,

Yes I also did a lot of reading and already read some of the links you sent.
I however did have success with using windows with my docking station, if you read the linux mint forum link that I added in my original mail I think it is mentioned somewhere-

    https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=411140

When using windows with this dock it was like a different world, everything worked very well.

I will continue to use the dock because laptops now are being built with less and less ports (to me this is annoying) and this gives me no choice. Hopefully linux developers will realise that the docking stations are becoming more integral for laptop
users and adjust the software accordingly.
Here is another on person on ArchLinux with the issue so I am not sure if it is just a debian issue?-

I suspect the issue is with the Linux Kernel and Docking Station
driver, so hopefully someone can explain where and how to report the
    issue.

&gt; &gt; &gt; I have an issue to report but don't know how to go about it. Here is the issue-<br>
    &gt; &gt; &gt; <br>
    &gt; &gt; &gt; Hello,<br>
&gt; &gt; &gt; There seems to be some issues with the 'ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2' and some operating systems that are based on Debian. I am not sure if this is the correct place to let a developer know but I have tried using the 'ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen
2' with both Linux Mint and MXLinux and had the same issues with both. As they are both based on Debian I thought the issue should be raised here. Issues are-<br>
    &gt; &gt; &gt; <br>
&gt; &gt; &gt; - Ethernet connection through the dock runs slow and then turns on and off.<br>
    &gt; &gt; &gt; <br>
&gt; &gt; &gt; - Hdmi connection through the dock gives colour issues on screen, everything is darker than normal.<br>
    &gt; &gt; &gt; <br>
&gt; &gt; &gt; There is more details about the issue on the linux mint forum here-<br>
    &gt; &gt; &gt; <a target="_blank" class="blue" href="https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=411140">https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=411140</a><br>
    &gt; &gt; &gt; <br>
    &gt; &gt; &gt; but there is no real solution.<br>
&gt; &gt; &gt; I believed in time the issue might be solved with kernal updates but the dock remains broken for some Linux users.Thanks.<br>
    &gt; &gt; <br>
    &gt; &gt; <br>
    &gt; &gt; Hi there.<br>
    &gt; &gt; <br>
&gt; &gt; Apologies for replying with out any useful information.<br>
    &gt; &gt; <br>
&gt; &gt; In the work place I had used docking stations for dual monitors, networks, to virtual desktops, and they seemed to work great.<br>
    &gt; &gt; <br>
&gt; &gt; So at home I tried to use a StarTech USB-C docking station with my Debian laptop. I had stability (connection like) issues where the network would not remain connected, cutting in and out. I think there were monitor issues too. I tested the
docking station on a Windows 11 PC of similar brand and model, same issues kept happening. I concluded that the pain was not worth it, and stopped using docking stations. If I had more money, I would try other brands, but doubting whether I would get
success, I decided not to pursue the issue further.<br>
    &gt; &gt; <br>
&gt; &gt; I would be curious how many people in this email list are using docking stations with 100% reliability and success (and then what brand these the working ones are)?<br>
    &gt; &gt; <br>
    &gt; &gt; I hope you get to find a working solution.<br>
    &gt; &gt; <br>
&gt; &gt; After researching the 'ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2' online, I see that other people also report issues. Since the number of reports I found were few, I guess other people have success with the device?<br>

I use a similar Thinkpad dock[1] that had similar issues. Upgrading the
dock firmware via Windows fixed most of the issues for me.
