I noticed on the list there is a message id. is it possible to copy
the message id to the email so the chain just keeps going ?

If your MUA doesn't have an explicit "reply to list" feature, then just
use "reply all", and remove everything except the list address from
    the headers.

If you don't do a reply, then the In-Reply-To header which places your
message into the thread won't be set up, and your message will just
be a new thread with the same Subject as an existing one. Some of the
archives may be clever enough to attempt thread joins via Subject header +
Date as well as the normal In-Reply-To header, but some may not.

If for some reason you ever NEED to construct a reply manually, what
you're doing is a good start. You just need to copy the Message-Id
from the message to which you're replying, and add an In-Reply-To header:

    In-Reply-To: <messageid>

The <angle> <brackets> are literal here; you should add them.

In my email client (Thunderbird) there is a "Reply list" command, which sets
up the message-ID behind the scenes. Yours may have a similar command. I'm not sure how one would do it manually. Getting it slightly wrong would
result in a broken thread at best, and possibly an unparsaeble message.

Honestly, and speaking personally, like many conversations, it depends on
how you are joining in as it were.

for example, I read all the list posts in my inbox. therefore, for this message, I chose reply, put something at the start so you knew what I was doing, and placed my answer under yours. Much as if we were actually
engaged in a conversation. does that resonate?

I personally cannot speak to that idea. I read using my email client,
pine for me, and place that in context. Speaking personally, keeping the subject line clear is helpful. That also means changing that subject line
if you are really starting a new idea so to speak.
If you are reading somewhere else, perhaps others reading in the same
    fashion will offer ideas.
Hope this gives you a helpful way to share your perspective though!

    Best,

    Karen

My impression is that it is impossible in gmail web UI.

    Thanks.

I gave up and now using K-9 mail and it seems to be working fine.

It is working fine. In-reply-to header is set. Thanks for caring!

    Cheers
