i've always used firefox's builtin manager

I use (and like) keepassx. The only thing I don't like is right now the
type is really small. It used to be readable.

keepassxc is a cross platform tool that our family has used for over a decade. It can optionally integrate with your browser, and you can import your current Firefox passwords from a CSV file.

I've relied on PasswordSafe for many years and never experienced any
problems. I also use the port to Android, again with no problems.

Huh. If I run it from a terminal emulator it looks fine, but if XFCE
launches it the text is tiny. Looks like QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME isn't being
set. Which means something is running a not-login shell, something between startx and xfwm. It's defined in ~/.profile. Any ideas?

Let me provide a dissenting view. I use "pass". It might even be built
in. I don't recall. It's a command line program, but it encrypts
anything you like, including security questions, usernames, etc. It
encrypts using GPG, so you never have to worry about your password
program going away or being dropped from Debian. And it will copy your
password (or anything else in the the password file) to the clipboard
for pasting into your browser. It allows you to search for your password
files using a partial name. I keep a terminal open at all times for
various purposes, including to use this program.

~/.profile is only sourced when bash is run as a login shell, which is
not the case when XFCE starts. To set environment variables for
applications started by XFCE, add lines before the last line in ~/.config/xfce4/xinitrc

For example, the end of my ~/.config/xfce4/xinitrc looks like:

    # some lines
    export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=qt5ct
    # more lines
    . /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc

You will need to log out and in again for this change to take effect.
You will also need the qt5ct package installed. You should then be able
to run Settings / Qt5 Settings from the XFCE menu (or qt5ct from the
command line) to change your Qt theme and font settings.

    Cheers,

That file doesn't exist, but this one might work:

I put it in there and removed it from ~/.profile, so we'll see the next
    time I log into X.

That worked. Maybe ~/.xinitrc is an old location? I'll probably leave it there unless there's a good reason to move it.

.xinitrc is the dotfile used by startx across multiple Unix/Linux implementations.

Debian's startx will use that file if it exists, or .xsession if that
exists. I don't know which one wins if you have both. If you have
neither, it uses a system-wide default Xsession file.

.xsession is the dotfile used by xdm. And, on Debian, by startx. This
allows you to switch from startx to xdm (or vice versa) without
changing your setup, if you go with .xsession instead of .xinitrc.

On the other hand, if your home directory is shared by multiple systems,
some of which are not Debian, and you wish to use startx on all of
them, then .xinitrc would be the better choice.

Debian also uses the .xsessionrc file (not to be confused with .xsession), which is read by all X sessions regardless of whether they're started by
startx or some Display Manager, and also regardless of whether you've
got a .xinitrc file, or a .xsession file, or neither.

For most users, if you only use Debian, the best place to configure your X session's environment is the ~/.xsessionrc file.

If reading this leads you to scream "WHY in the HELL is it this
COMPLICATED?!", know that you are not alone. Unfortunately, this is
only a small part of the picture. The full picture is even worse.

Yup, I'm pretty sure there was also ~/.dmrc at some point. :-p

    [algorithm from heck]

Wow. Thanks for explaining that. Fortunately, I only have Debian and plan
to change things as little as possible in the future, so I think that if I leave things as they are, they'll keep working for a while. I do have ~/.xsession and I wondered why there are both. Maybe one or the other is a leftover from fvwm.

Inference: Back when, several somebodies all did it differently. Then, when combined they want backward compatibility until the dawn of time, and this
    is the mess that results.

what are y'alls recommendations for a password manager

    and i'm lazy

Let me provide a dissenting view. I use "pass". It might even be built in. I don't recall. It's a command line program, but it encrypts anything you like, including security questions, usernames, etc. It encrypts using GPG, so you never have to worry
about your password program going away or being dropped from Debian. And it will copy your password (or anything else in the the password file) to the clipboard for pasting into your browser. It allows you to search for your password files using a
partial name. I keep a terminal open at all times for various purposes, including to use this program.

+1 for "pass". There's the browserpass add-on for desktop browsers. There is also an Android app (and probably one for iOS, I'm not sure). The sync mechanism between devices is usually git which has the added benefit of change history.

    +1

it allows for a hierarchical representation of the different entries and
bonus marks because there is an excellent Emacs mode.
