• kmail + akonadi + trouble

From Hans@21:1/5 to All on Thu Nov 7 22:30:01 2024
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

    Hi folks,

I am now working for hours, to get kmail running again.

    Problem:
I have two computers running kmail. And I want both running the same configuration with the
same mails on each computer. In other words: I want a clone of kmail on the other computer.

Thus I rsynced all my mails to the same location as on computer A, which is

    ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/

Then deleted all akonadi files on computer B and synced all akonadi files from

    ~/.config/
    ~/local/share/

of computer A to same location on B.

    --------------------

Now the special thing: On computer A (where everything is runing fine) I have only one folder,
which is "KMail-Ordner" and got the non deletable "inbox", "drafts" and "template" folders.

When starting kmail, it creates automatically a new folder in kmail named

    Local Folders,

    which is not deletable.

First issue: I changed the path to the folder of "Local Folders" from

    /home/my_name/.local/share/local-mails/
    to
    /home/my_name/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/

and would have expected, that now all my mails are rerad and appear in "Local Folders" - but it
    did NOT!

    --------------------
When I now add a new mailbox and chose "KMail-Folder" and point it to the same folder as
above, all mails appear. But now I got two main folders, this is not what I want.

    --------------------

As I could not find any satisfying answer in the web, and obviously I am the first one with this
    wish, I am asking here:

    1. The "Local Folder" is a maildir, the "KMail-Folder" is a mixedmaildir. Can this be changed?

    2. Which files do I have to delete and copy from A to B to get a clone of kmail on B?

    3. How can I get surely rid of all akonadi files for kmail on computer B?

    4. What is the wrong thinking, when pointing "Local Folders" to the place, where my mails are?

    --------------------
I know, this is very special stuff and most documnetations related to kmail and akonadi are very
old and for very old versions. So it is very difficult for me, to find out, how things are getting
    fixed.

So I hope, someone very experienced with akonadi and kmail can help.

Thank you for this in advance!

    Best
    Hans

I have been doing something somewhat similar to provide a backup for
my mail server (I get mail delivered directly by SMTP to a postfix
    server on a home machine.)

I have simply duplicated the postfix setup on the two machines, then I
change the port forwarding in my router to deliver it to either the
main (default) server or the backup server. This is simple and not
    really what you're after.

However I also synchronise the whole of my mail client software (mutt
in my case) between the two systems using syncthing. This means that
wherever the mail gets delivered to by postfix (i.e. either backup or
main server) it gets duplicated to the other system by syncthing.

This works perfectly, I can read mail on either system using mutt and everything looks identical and keeps in step. Syncthing is a very
    clever bit of software.
