This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
    Dear Experts,

I am an experienced Linux server administrator, having started my
journey with Red Hat Linux 6.0 in 1999. Over the years, I have worked
with various Linux distributions such as CentOS and Ubuntu Server,
addressing diverse requirements and applications. My past experience
    includes configuring services like:

    * *Sendmail SMTP server*
    * *BIND DNS server*
    * *FTP server*
    * *Squid proxy server*

While I have had intermittent engagement with Linux systems over the
years, I am now eager to dive deeper into the intricacies of Linux
server administration. My goal is to enhance my skills and knowledge,
enabling me to tackle more complex scenarios with confidence.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could recommend any active mailing
lists, forums, or discussion groups where Linux server administrators
regularly exchange ideas, troubleshoot issues, and share solutions.
Engaging with a community of experts would be invaluable as I embark on
this deeper exploration of Linux server administration.

Thank you in advance for your guidance and support.

    Best regards,
    Muhammad Nadeem Anjum

I would greatly appreciate it if you could recommend any active mailing lists, forums, or discussion groups where Linux server administrators regularly exchange ideas, troubleshoot issues, and share solutions.

One place to start, especially if you are interested in Debian, might
be the debian-user mailing list. Many of the concepts discussed there
also apply to other distributions, although slight adjustments in
    actual implementation may be required.

The Arch and Gentoo wikis also feature much useful material, although
for obvious reasons primarily geared toward those respective
distributions; so again, if you're using something which is not Arch
or Gentoo some adjustments might be needed to fit your distribution of
    choice.

I can also recommend joining discussion forums for major pieces of
software you're running. For example, zfs-discuss often has good
discussions, but those would naturally be of little benefit if you're
    not using ZFS.

    Hello Muhammad!

I second the arch wiki option.
Great resource with much details that apply to most distros.
This list is also very generic,
with a broad range of topics covered,
from booting to installing to operating to troubleshooting different software and hardware.

Another community I sometimes go to is the linuxquestions.org forums,
and for more real-time interaction I like to hang out on the #linux channel on liberachat IRC servers,
or, if it's debian specific, on the #debian channel (also on liberachat).
Some specific software communities prefer to use other IRC servers like oftc (#dovecot for example).

I also like to take text notes in an outliner software.
It saves me countless hours of search time.

    Best,

Debian official IRC channels are now pretty much all on oftc. liberachat is fine - and you may find the same folk are also on #debian in both -
but you may well get directed to ask again in oftc.

This. Take notes. Before you go editing files to change things, copy the existing file to a backup copy. That way, you can always rename the backup
copy and replace the edited file contents with the original file contents
as they were before you started changing anything.

Oh! thanks for the heads up!
I haven't been there since a little while now,

For that kind of notes, my servers usually have a /root/ChangeLog file where I document all the changes I've made,
    and why I made them.
    If anything goes wrong,
I read the latest entries in the ChangeLog and try to figure out what changes led to the possible consquences.

But I was referring to general tips like the usual commands,
the common command line options, the common configuration options...

For example, here's an imgur album[1] where I show my emacs cheat-sheet
    in emacs itself
(I'm using emacs as the outliner software)

The move of all the official Debian channels to OFTC happened about 18
    years ago. <https://lwn.net/Articles/184937/>

The #debian channel on Libera (formerly on Freenode, which in turn was
formerly known as OPN) is an "unofficial" one, despite being fairly
popular. This has been the case since the OFTC move in 2006.

Freenode is now defunct, or should be considered defunct. It underwent
a change of management in 2001, followed by a huge amount of drama,
and essentially every channel left, going largely to Libera, or in some
cases to OFTC, or other networks. <https://www.theregister.com/2021/05/26/freenode_irc_takeover/>

    Dear Timothy,

Thank you for sharing your experience and mentioning the Linux
Professional Institute (LPI). I’ve heard of LPI before, and it’s great
to know that you’ve already earned their Linux Essentials and Security Essentials certifications—congratulations on those achievements!

I completely agree with you about the value of certifications for
growing skills and professional credibility. Certifications provide a structured way to validate knowledge and open up new opportunities. I’m currently focusing on Linux system administration, security, and cloud computing, and I’ll certainly explore LPI’s offerings in more depth.

Do you have any tips or resources that helped you prepare for these certifications? I’d appreciate any insights or advice you can share from
    your experience.

Thanks again for the suggestion and encouragement!
