• Moderating this list and the FAQ ...

    From Andrew M.A. Cater@21:1/5 to All on Sun Dec 1 17:10:01 2024
    Good afternoon all,

As you may have noticed, I've updated the monthly FAQ today. I've added a
small amount around political/religious/other debate and also about not responding to trolls.

The political/religious/other debate addition is because I've noticed a
couple of those over the last six months or so with people being politically contentious. That's probably fine in other contexts - it's probably not appropriate for a user-centred and Debian-centred list where the audience
is worldwide and where nationalist or religious based politics may be irrelevant to a large part of the audience on the sidelines.

Trolls and people stirring up old controversies may not need a new
response. It *is* difficult to put down the keyboard and wait - but sometimes it's best to not respond for a day and see what responses are made on list,
if any, rather than adding to an argument.

Having written that, if you feel someone is being a troll or behaving badly
or behaving inappropriately on the list *please* send a short note to community@debian.org for the team to review it. Please don't wait, thinking that someone else will do it - if more than one of the list readers does so, then that gives more than one viewpoint for the Debian community team
    to consider.

From time to time, people suggest formal moderation of all Debian lists.
From experience, that's hard and time consuming and formal approval of
all posts on this list would make it the list less timely and useful.
If no-one has any objection to my posting the FAQ, then I plan to keep
    doing so.

With best wishes to all, both the regular contributors to the list and
also those reading later or finding posts in the archives.
