• Non packaged hplip on trixie (testing) ?

From Erwan David@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jan 28 14:40:01 2025
Current hplip package in testing and sid requires python 3.12

Several packages in testing now require 3.13 (eg libreoffice and borg).
Since there is no newer package in sid, and Trixie freeze approaches, I
worry on the usability of hplip in Trixie.

Did someone try the non packaged verion on a Trixie ?

PS: no driverless printing is NOT the solution for me.

    1) It relies on a zeroconf dicover pf the printer, which is limited to
the boradcast domain (the local network). My printer is not on the same
    network as the computer.

    2) It is limited to printing, I need hplip also for scan (which means
also using a binary blob manged by hplip).

Will Trixie ship without Python 3.12? The python3.12 package exists in unstable and testing. The packaging issue with hplip appears to be that
it depends on "python3 (< 3.13)". Perhaps it should depend on python3.12 instead.

The hplip package certainly needs work for Trixie: besides the above
    there's also two RC bugs.

I looked at the package. To make it depnd on python3.12 would not be a
problem, except for other dependencies like python3-pyqt5. I'll try to
check wether all of them can be used with both versions of pythons.
Another possibility is that hplip can work with python 3.13 but it was
not known at time of packaging. I'll try to setup VMs and try those
solutions, however, I never created a VM with graphical sessions (to
test xsane), so I hope that scanning through scanimage is equivalent and
can validate a solution or the other
