Update: Steam runs successfully on Debian Trixie and on Arch Linux. Still failing on Debian Bookworm.
Hi,
Any use Steam?
We do. About an hour ago, I was using steam to play a game and all was working well. Then a member of the family reported that they were
unable to load Steam. We tested on another (third) computer, and as
Steam started, it checks for updates and then never loaded.
I then exited steam on my computer and ran steam again. It started to
load, check and started updates, and then failed to load.
When I run Steam from the command line, I get the following messages.
I am posting this hoping it may help others.
And hoping if anyone else has issues that you let me know.
My hope is that this is a bug for a Steam managed update, and they
will soon fix the issue so starting test once more will run an update
and fix the issue. I hope to check steam forums soon.
We run Debian Bookworm on AMD graphics cards, in XFCE and in KDE
(tried both Wayland and X11). All computers have latest Debian
updates installed.
I noticed in the below messages "/ubuntu12_32", which has me a bit
concerned, I do not like seeing "ubuntu" when using Debian.

I plan to deploy Steam on my Debian but I haven't begun to. I remember that on the Steam website, the website says that the requirement of the Steam app is 'a xxx version *Ubuntu' system'. They might have hardcoded this in the binary - hopefully justthe early development.

These directories contain a bunch of shared libs and shell script
wrappers and who knows what else, presumably to provide a runtime
environment that the Steam binaries are comfortable running in.
Fingers crossed that it continues working.

I guess you're not alone.

Maybe you can roll back to a previous version until the dust settles.
The Debian Steam wiki says you can try running Steam without its own
RUNTIME (in the case the problem might lie with new libraries):
STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam
It appears that the update Valve pushed out this morning was a Ubuntu
update that was mistakenly installed on Debian Stable.

Debian Trixie did not receive the update and still works as normal.
Launching 'LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 steam -no-cef-sandbox' from the command line will start Steam. The first time you launch it Steam's GUI will not load. You have to enter big picture mode which works fine the when you exit big picture mode the Steam GUI will load properly.

I just tested Steam on Fedora and steam works well.
Tomorrow I will try Debian Bookworm again and see if any updates have
fixed the issue. I will post back if it starts working.
(PS: I have tried three Debian Bookworm computers, one XFCE and two KDE, all fail to load Steam)
Thanks for people's comments.

Update:
Launching 'LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 steam -no-cef-sandbox' from the command did not work for me, Steam tried to launch a bit further but still broke.
I will sit back and wait for Valve to fix this Steam issue (which I hope they do soon)
I have not posted on the below thread as the issue has already been raised: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/11807#issuecomment-2714995696
Thank you for others reporting that you also see the issue. I will see if I can try with a different video card other than AMD.
Previously I had tried the below backports on a test computer but they did not help and I do NOT recommend them:
# apt install -t bookworm-backports firmware-amd-graphics
and later on I tired:
# apt install -t bookworm-backports libudev1 libudev-dev
