• Steam was working an hour ago, now it will not load

From George at Clug@21:1/5 to All on Tue Mar 11 11:50:01 2025
    Hi,

    Any use Steam?

We do. About an hour ago, I was using steam to play a game and all was
working well. Then a member of the family reported that they were
unable to load Steam. We tested on another (third) computer, and as
Steam started, it checks for updates and then never loaded.

I then exited steam on my computer and ran steam again. It started to
load, check and started updates, and then failed to load.

When I run Steam from the command line, I get the following messages.

I am posting this hoping it may help others.

And hoping if anyone else has issues that you let me know.

My hope is that this is a bug for a Steam managed update, and they
will soon fix the issue so starting test once more will run an update
and fix the issue. I hope to check steam forums soon.

We run Debian Bookworm on AMD graphics cards, in XFCE and in KDE
(tried both Wayland and X11).  All computers have latest Debian
    updates installed.

I noticed in the below messages "/ubuntu12_32", which has me a bit
concerned, I do not like seeing "ubuntu" when using Debian.

Now I'm scared. I've got a running instance of Steam which has
    already downloaded an update.

    [2025-03-11 07:26:21] uninstalled manifest found in /home/greg/.steam/debian-installation/package/steam_client_ubuntu12 (1).

I haven't stopped and restarted Steam to let the update try to apply
itself. I hope that either (a) I don't have whatever problem you have,
or (b) another update that fixes the broken update will be downloaded
before I have to restart Steam. Assuming that the update is actually
broken and this isn't just a problem on your machine alone.

    Do not restart ! LOL.

I just tested Steam on Fedora and steam works well.

Tomorrow I will try Debian Bookworm again and see if any updates have fixed the issue. I will post back if it starts working.

(PS: I have tried three Debian Bookworm computers, one XFCE and two KDE, all fail to load Steam)

    Thanks for people's comments.

    I guess you're not alone.

Maybe you can roll back to a previous version until the dust settles.

The Debian Steam wiki says you can try running Steam without its own
RUNTIME (in the case the problem might lie with new libraries):

    STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam

I just restarted Steam a couple minutes ago, and it worked for me.
I didn't need to do any workarounds. Just exited via the menu bar,
then re-ran "steam" from the terminal. A pending update was extracted,
and then the GUI launched normally.

I don't know if I just got lucky, or if there was a fix pushed out.

    Hi,

I have seen the same issue, and found this comment; https://github.com/ ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/11807#issuecomment-2714995696

Starting Steam like this works for me as a temporary workaround.

    Greetings
    Nils

Debian Trixie did not receive the update and still works as normal.

Launching 'LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 steam -no-cef-sandbox' from the command line will start Steam. The first time you launch it Steam's GUI will not load. You have to enter big picture mode which works fine the when you exit big picture mode the Steam GUI will load properly.

The issue also appears to be related to your video hardware. AMD GPU
users are affected; it's not clear whether others are.

I have an onboard Intel and I'm not affected.

    Update:

Launching 'LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 steam -no-cef-sandbox' from the command did not work for me, Steam tried to launch a bit further but still broke.

I will sit back and wait for Valve to fix this Steam issue (which I hope they do soon)

I have not posted on the below thread as the issue has already been raised: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/11807#issuecomment-2714995696

Thank you for others reporting that you also see the issue. I will see if I can try with a different video card other than AMD.

Previously I had tried the below backports on a test computer but they did not help and I do NOT recommend them:

    # apt install -t bookworm-backports firmware-amd-graphics
    and later on I tired:
    # apt install -t bookworm-backports libudev1 libudev-dev

UPDATE: Steam now working in Debian 12 (Bookworm)

I have tested both Debian 12 (Bookworm) XFCE and KDE. As Steam started, it updated and it is now working once again on both these computers.

If you use Steam and have experienced this issue, please confirm if Steam is now working for you too.

When the user of the third computer is available, I will be able to validate that Steam is working on that computer too.

Thanks for those who commented, and to Valve for their quick response. With so many different Distributions, and versions within those distributions, different video cards, etc. I often wonder how Linux programs manage to work so well (most of the time).
    Well back to gaming...
