• Can you help me run Box64 on my Raspberry Pi 5?

From Matt Timpson@21:1/5 to All on Mon Apr 7 18:30:02 2025
    Hello all,

I want to run a .deb file written for x64 processors on my Raspberry Pi 5, which I run Linux on. Unfortunately I don't know a damn thing about computers and need step-by-step instructions. I have tried and failed to pay computer technicians online to
help me because most of them don't work in Linux.

    Thanks,
    Matt Timpson πŸ‰

The wiki is a place for Debian developers and community members to
write documentation related to Debian. It's not really a place to ask questions if you're asking for support.

If you're looking for assistance with using Debian, there are several
    better places:

    * the debian-user mailing list: debian-user@lists.debian.org
    * IRC: #debian on irc.debian.org
    * forums: https://forums.debian.net/

Also, do you have a policy on AI scraping your community-run
encyclopedia? I would love to ask a robot for help rather than take
time out of real people's lives.

Many of the morons running crawlers for AI training have been killing
sites like the Debian wiki with uncontrolled crawling, ignoring
information like robots.txt. We've had to block a lot of sites and
networks because of this appalling selfish behaviour.

    Hello,

Raspberry pi uses arm and aarch64 (arm64). This is not x64 like Intel or
    AMD.

You have to recompile if possible otherwise you cant use this.
A other try can be kvm but I have not try to emulate a x64 on a aarch64 cpu.

    Good luck and best regards,

    Hi Matt,

take a look at this link:

    https://community.fydeos.io/t/topic/26128[1]

    Maybe it will help you.

And please note: You need packages fro arm or arm64, packages for amd64 do not work on
    this hardware.

But the good thing: Debian has an arm port and most packages are ready-for-install available.

    Thank you very much, Debian!!!

    Best

    Hans

Best to start by telling us which .deb package you want to run
    and where it comes from.

And also check this link: https://pi-apps.io/install-app/install-box64-on-linux-arm-device/[1]

You may also want to just `apt install box64` since according to https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/box64 it's in Debian testing.

From what I just learnt, Box64 (mentioned in this mail#s subject) is
actually an emulator to run on arm and then used to run x86 code.

So, my question here is what does your Raspberry run as an operating system?

and then, I guess, the fun starts :-)

You don't say which version of which linux you use. Most people with R
Pis run Raspberry Pi OS, which is derived from Debian but is not
Debian. If you run that you may be better asking on a Raspberry Pi
    forum.

Your subject hints that you want to use box64 to accomplish your goal.
If so you may want to look at such web sites as https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-x64/ or https://pi-apps.io/install-app/install-box64-on-raspberry-pi/ or https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=336742

This mailing list is for users of the debian operating system itself,
not for derivatives such as R Pi OS or Ubuntu etc etc.

Have you tried asking them for support? They have a support
email address at the bottom of that webpage, and presumably you
    have paid them money.

Failing that, have you checked to see whether xsane supports
    your new scanner?

In this context, it's probably enough to say that numpy is a numeric
library which will be part of the software used to post process Matt's
scanned images. If he ever gets that far with this X-Y problem.

That most likely is you trying to indirectly run an executable in x86_64 format on the Pi which is arm64. You haven't shared what command you
ran to provoke this error, but it looks like you need to inject box64 somewhere in the execution path.

You can ask specific questions here, or on the Box mailing list
(or on the KVM or QEMU lists, if applicable.) Everyone on these
lists is a volunteer, mostly users with some devs.

If you want to pay for support with Debian, there is a list of
    consultants at https://www.debian.org/consultants/
