by unchecking the "maximize" and restarting tbird I now have it the size

I wanted, but have lost the upper right panel with the header info in it,

and all its menu's.  And while the "hot" keys still work they work while

I'm typing a MSG, so I have to glance at the screen for every character

I type to assure it hasn't popped up yet another menu,  An I using the wrong

keyboard?  Thanks, And my Sig has disappeared. but file is there and
    selected

    in account settings.

Open some other program that also has a menu. Like maybe a text editor.
Does that also act like that when you're typing?

Is your 'Alt' key stuck? That would bring up menus during typing. If I
was experiencing that problem, I would carefully press and release each
'alt' key, noting whether it seems mechanically OK. After pressing 'alt'
I need to click once on my text to take the focus away from the menu or
I bring up menu while typing. Next I would unplug the keyboard from the
usb then plug it back in. If it is a wireless keyboard I would also
replace its batteries, as I get random weird operation with a low
battery in my cheap keyboard. I would reboot the pc, and try swapping
keyboards with another pc to confirm whether the problem stays with the keyboard or the pc.

Even the mouse could cause this. Make sure the focus is on the text
where you want to type. Unplug the mouse from the pc. Type some stuff.

Did the problem go away with the mouse unplugged?

Seems to be a very rare problem, but I once had a wired mouse that
clicked randomly. Very annoying. I eventually snipped off its USB cord
so I never try using it again.
