    Hello

What chance do I have of getting Debian to run on my new RPi 5 ?

If it is possible to get debootstrap to start it going, I would apreciate advice.

I did try images from https://raspi.debian.net/daily-images/ but they will not work on RPi 5 (only say they work up to 4) and the boot loader spat some error message when I tried to boot a trixie image.

I can run Raspbian - but I would rather not.

I can run some version of Ubuntu (the desktop version, but not the server), but again I would rather not.

I intend to run the machine as a kubernetes server. I think that I would prefer to use Ubuntu over Raspbian, but would much prefer Debian.

So, I could run it headless, but would prefer if I could use the HDMI output.

Pure Debian will likely be possible in the long term, but it may take a while.

The Debian kernel team refuse to package vendor downstream kernels (ubuntu are more flexible on this). So the first thing that needs to happen is adequate support for the Pi 5 in upstream kernels. Some searches turned up that there does seem to be some raspberry pi 5 related activity on the upstream kernel mailing lists (e.g. https://www.spinics.net/lists/kernel/msg4986331.html )

Once there is adequate support in upstream kernels, then the Debian packaging can be updated to support it.

In the meantime it's almost certainly possible to run a pure Debian userland with a kernel from Raspberry pi.

Peter Robinson wrote on Fedora Arm mailing list how far any support for Raspberry/Pi 5 is when it comes to mainline kernel distros (like Debian
    or Fedora).

    https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/arm@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/ER5R4CSDCZENQSVSPULNGSAFK63SQZDK/

    In short: as usual, forget.

Use Raspbian (or how they call it) and wait a year or more.

    From what's posted here:

Raspberry Pi engineers have decided sleep/hibernate are too costly to

That refers to Pi 4 (well it doesn't refer to Pi 4, but it was before the launch of Pi 5!)

On Pi 5, the suspend to SDRAM is implemented in the kernel and firmware (it worked the last time we tested it, but of course might be broken at the moment). What we're waiting for is support from the SDRAM PHY team at
Broadcom to provide the sequences to get into and out of self-refresh
    mode...

We're expecting to have that sometime in the new year...
