Turns out that, if I let it sit for long enough, something does happen:
I get an initramfs shell (probably unrelated as I had other scripts
fail today because /dev/disks/by-label/* wasn’t filled quickly enough)
in basically the VGA text console with its built-in font.

that is the rootfs isn't found or something similar I guess? Does that

Unrelated thing I fixed in the meantime.

Do I understand correctly that the kernel boots just fine if you operate
    grub in text mode only?

I haven’t tested that. What I tested is to add vga=791 on the kernel commandline from within a graphical grub and boot that.

I can try some more combinations later as both grub and kernel got
    updates in the meantime.

The kernel log in your report contains a warning related to pcmcia. Is
that related to your problem? (Maybe try blacklisting the pcmcia kernel >module?)

Unrelated. I just put an old PCMCIA modem into the slot to avoid the
laptop shell breaking, it’s a weak spot on Thinkpads. It also comes
    much, MUCH later.

    Hi again!

I can try some more combinations later as both grub and kernel got
    updates in the meantime.

I just did the following test: just boot without adding the kernel
    commandline parameter.

    What I got, with…

    ii grub-pc 2.12-8 amd64 GRand Unified Bootloader, version 2 (PC/BIOS version)
    ii grub-pc-bin 2.12-8 amd64 GRand Unified Bootloader, version 2 (PC/BIOS modules)
    ii linux-image-6.12.31-amd64 6.12.31-1 amd64 Linux 6.12 for 64-bit PCs (signed)

… was: the kernel starts pretty much immediately (after slow load
from USB stick and decompression), switches to the VGA text console
    and outputs things.

After 8s (“crng init done”), there’s an “integritysetup open” call that takes a while (I have put a manual dm-integrity layer below
the LUKS on which my LVM resides, as I now do for RAIDs, too).

Then I entered my LUKS password and pressed Enter, which is probably
the 53s message, it then fsck’d / and mounted it (59s), at which time
normal booting continued. Some time afterwards, the kernel switched
    to fbcon.

I’ll have to see how the hiDPI laptop behaves once it arrives, that
is, whether the video mode set will be legible enough during initramfs
as well (scaled-up VGA text console should probably also do).

I did put a “setfont” into the initramfs, but it appears that Linux doesn’t yet know enough before the LUKS prompt to switch the video
mode (missing parameter?) unless vga=… was given on the command line,
in which case it will have switched early on.

    bye,
    //mirabilos

    Hm.

The EFI-only hiDPI laptop has arrived, and this works there.

If there’s still interest in debugging this with grub-pc,
I’m game, or otherwise just control-close this.
