The Firefox page on the Gentoo wiki mentions the add blocker AdNausium. I use that successfully.

On other systems I have just used an add blocking hosts file. Also works pretty well, though not as well as AdNausium. Has the advantage that it applies system wide and does not require any browser plug-in.

    Greetings,

Has anyone succeeded with an ad blocker for Firefox? I've tried the top three recommended and none of them make the slightest difference.

If not Firefox, is there an equivalent browser that can block sponsored entries? The two chrome versions apparently aren't available as binpkgs, and this is just a little machine, poor thing.

I use AdBlock Plus, and it works fine for me.

Out of curiousity, which three have you tried?

    What are those three?

I use a pihole in my home WiFi for all devices. And in my desktop Firefoxes,
I use uMatrix and uBlock Origin. (Mind you, *not* uBlock, that’s a totally different thing).

Back in the past I used mostly noscript and AdBlock Plus. But at some point ABP sold out, so I switched. And then noscript became more and more of a nuisance, because ever more pages stopped working. uMatrix has a similar approach, in that it allows to block various types of files/requests for separate domains. But it allows for rules like “allow scripts for the first-party domain, but never cookes” in a matrix-like widget. Hence the name.

So for some time I used uMatrix alone. But at some point, I got ads in
YouTube again. So I added uBlock Origin back into the mix with only the most popular lists. I didn’t do any deep research into which lists are “the best”.

If not Firefox, is there an equivalent browser that can block sponsored entries? The two chrome versions apparently aren't available as binpkgs

Their adblocking capabilities are greatly reduced anyways these days due to addon manifest v3.

and this is just a little machine, poor thing.

All the more reason to replace ABP with uBlock Origin, as it is more efficient.

You might be interested to switch to uBlock Origin. It is more efficient[0] and has long had its day[1].

[0] https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/uBlock-vs.-ABP:-efficiency-compared [1] uBlock is free, whereas ABP has a subscription model with ad white-lists.

Well, it took a big, 'ard, 'eavy 'ammer, but I've fixed it (I think).

New system installed from scratch [1], not using any of the old binary packages, then new user account for me.

So far, neither ads nor sponsors have shown up.

    1. I use bootctl from systemd-utils, but that's the only systemd package in the system. Today I had to hard-mask sys-apps/systemd to get the utils to install; I haven't had to do that before.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
