    Does CTRL+Shift+P work to toggle it on and off?

    That should open the Paragraph Format pane. (Nothing to do with
    the formatting marks, which are Ctrl-Shift-8 [which is asterisk on
    the US keyboard but can be other things on other keyboards].)

    I have been combing websites to figure out how to turn off the formatting marks that I mysteriously turned on and your suggestion did it! Thank you!! I had tried a million things!
