My problem was solved by doing the following:
Open Registry Editor (click Start | Run | regedit.exe)
Goto this location:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpg\ShellEx
Delete "ShellEx" entry.

I also have this dreaded problem, but with MPEG2 files not AVIs. Anything new
in the way of resolving it? I'm using XP w/SP2 on a fresh install. All I have
to do is click (not open) on a MPEG2 in list mode and explorer crashes. If I
have thumbnails view selected, explorer crashes as soon as the folder is opened. So I can't copy or move any of my MPEG2 files.
I haven't tried any of the potential fixes yet but I'm starting now. Thanks
for any suggestions.

I found out what was the cause of my problem: the DivX codec, version
5.1 I upgraded to DivX v5.2 , and my problem went away!!! I don't
know if this is applicable to your situation, but you might want to upgrade, if you have the "old" DivX codec installed.

I am having the same problem. It started after I installed SP2.
BUT - in my case I encounter the problem in ALL views - not just thumbnail
view. I hope this extra detail helps someone to figure this out.
TIA
