Vandross was born on April 20, 1951, in New York City. He was the youngest of four children and grew up in a public housing project on Manhattan's Lower East Side. His father, who was also a singer, died of diabetes when Vandross was eight years old.
Vandross developed a passion for music at an early age and taught himself to play the piano by ear. He also sang in a church choir and a vocal group called Shades of Jade. [^1^] [^2^] [^4^]

In 1972, Vandross wrote his first song, \"Everybody Rejoice\", for the Broadway musical The Wiz. He then started working as a session singer and arranger for various artists, such as Roberta Flack, David Bowie, Donna Summer, and Carly Simon. He also
formed a vocal quintet called Luther, which released two albums in 1976 and 1977. In 1980, he became the lead singer of the disco group Change and scored a hit with \"The Glow of Love\". [^1^] [^2^]

Vandross launched his solo career in 1981 with his debut album Never Too Much, which went platinum and topped the R&B charts. He followed it with a series of successful albums that showcased his distinctive style of romantic soul music. He also
