  • FDA approves Semglee, a new generic Lantus!

From Jim@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jul 29 14:55:22 2021
A friend emailed this link today:

    https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-approves-first-interchangeable-biosimilar-insulin-product-treatment-diabetes

Since the Medicare Donut Hole is killing me, I think I'll have my Doc change
my basal insulin back to Lantus from Tresiba. Then have the pharmacist substitute Semglee for Lantus. It may save money even if not in the formulary.

I used Lantus a few years ago. I thought it lower my dawn phenomenon by binding to IGF-1 receptors. But I was using 12U/day and at these low levels of insulin, it did not effect my Fasting Insulin Resistance Product (FIRP). The only concern is Lantus could cause the IGF-1 positive feedback loop that Humalog caused. So will have to watch for nocturnal hypoglycemic events
when using this new biosimilar insulin.

Tresiba is a special order item at my pharmacy. So not in stock. It is also too expensive, IMO, as it clobbers my Medicare Donut Hole.

So will probably change from Tresiba to Lantus next Doc appointment.

T1 4/86, no complications, watching for IGF-I positive feedback loop.
Nocturnal hypoglycemic seizures ended when stopped using Humalog (Lispro). Normal Dawn Phenomenon returned ~1 year later.

    Semglee basil insulin (estimated 15-to-35%
    less expensive substitute for Lantus)

    Important Highlights:

o Insulin glargine-yfgn (Semglee) is biosimilar
to and interchangeable with insulin glargine
    (Lantus), a long-acting insulin analog.

An interchangeable biosimilar can be substituted
for the reference product by pharmacists without
    prescriber intervention.

o Biosimilars marketed in the U.S. typically have
launched with initial list prices 15% to 35% lower
than comparative list prices of the reference pro-
    ducts.

o Note, already available, long-acting basil insulin
NPH, and short-acting bolus insulin Regular, at
Walmart, $24.99 each. Also newly available at
Walmart, short-acting bolus insulin Relion Novolog
insulin at $72.88 per vial (10 ml vial), the lowest
price ever for aspartame (analog) insulin.

    Pro-Humanist FREELOVER, I got Insulinitis
(Islit) which was caused by Insulitis at age 5
in March 1961, requiring multiple exogenous

15 specific types of rapid-onset Islit.

There is 1 specific type of slow-onset Islit,
    Latent Autoimmune Islit, also unpreventable
    & nonreversible (thus far).
