  • Implant with insulin refilling through magnetic ingestible capsules?

From _@21:1/5 to All on Wed Aug 18 12:30:42 2021
Photo of implant the size of two packs of
playing cards, placed inside the abdomen
on the outside of the stomach, with insulin
    refilling through magnetic ingestible cap-
sules; the implant is powered via wireless
    battery recharging: https://www.newscientist.com/article/2287225-diabetes-implant-is-restocked-by-swallowing-magnetic-insulin-capsules/#ixzz73vDzwbdb

I've searched for further details, haven't
found any, unknown at what stage this de-
velopment is at, when it might be tested, or
    when it might be approved.

The size, hmmm, appears rather big, & mys-
terious how magnetic ingestible pills would
be able to refill the implant. Also unclear, how
insulin would be dosed, if the implant has glu-
cose sensing or intelligent insulin dosing.

A lot of mystery in the following article which
requires prescribing to get to any details, &
I have a standard response to requests for
prescriptions of refusing to prescribe, so if
anyone prescribes, feel free to share any
further details about this mysterious area: https://www.newscientist.com/article/2287225-diabetes-implant-is-restocked-by-swallowing-magnetic-insulin-capsules/

    INSULINITIS (ISLIT)

New SUPERIOR clarifying name for near-
total to total loss of endogenous insulin https://prohuman.net/pix2/new_superior_clarifying_name_is_INSULINITIS.jpg

The overwhelming majority of Islit caused by
autoimmune attacks on pancreatic beta cells
    (Insulitis Islit) but there are

o 15 specific types of rapid onset Islit, a
rare condition (only present in < one-half
of 1% of Americans & in a much lower rate
in most of the world), when present is typ-
ically diagnosed at age under 30
    (50% at age < 18, 20% at age 19 to 29)

o 1 slow onset specific type, Latent Autoim-
mune Islit, frequency unknown but per a
    recent report, misdiagnosed as Cellosis
(new clarifying name for type 2 diabetes)
almost 40% of the time due to its slow
onset and its occurrence typically at age
    over 30

Old outdated anachronistic name for Islit is
type 1 diabetes, confusing in that diabetes
without clarifier is often used to describe
this condition which is 1 of the 7 Disparate
    High Glucose Conditions (DHGCs).

That makes figuring out which DHGC is actu-
ally being referred to (and it can be any one,
or some, or all of them when the diabetes
or diabetic word is used without clarifier)
    confusing / difficult: https://prohuman.net/pix2/diabetesdiabeticguessinggame.jpg https://prohuman.net/pix2/diabetesdiabeticconfusion.jpg https://prohuman.net/pix2/diabetesdiabeticendingthemisunderstanding.jpg

    - - -

It's estimated that 5% to 11% of Islit individuals
will die from severe hypoglycemia, the highest
risk of that being while sleeping (i.e., dead-in-
    bed syndrome).

    Follow-up:

The following device is similar to the device
described in the original article, perhaps it's
a device being worked on by an independent
group of researchers using many of the same
concepts but differing in the details.

The articles say this device has regulated glu-
cose levels in pigs, but doesn't convey any in-
    formation on hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, or
HbA1c levels or when testing is expected to be
    done in humans.

A fully implantable device for intraperitoneal
drug delivery refilled by ingestible capsules https://robotics.sciencemag.org/content/6/57/eabh3328
    - - -

... Here, we describe PILLSID (PILl-refiLled
    implanted System for Intraperitoneal Delivery),
a fully implantable robotic device refillable thru
    ingestible magnetic pills carrying drugs.

Once refilled, the device acts as a program-
mable microinfusion system for precise intra-
    peritoneal delivery.

The robotic device is grounded on a combina-
tion of magnetic switchable components, mini-
aturized mechatronic elements, a wireless pow-
ering system, and a control unit to implement
the refilling and control the infusion processes.

In this study, we describe the PILLSID prototyp-
ing. The device key blocks are validated as sin-
gle components and within the integrated device
    at the preclinical level.

We demonstrate that the refilling mechanism works
efficiently in vivo and that the blood glucose level
can be safely regulated in [pigs with Islit (Insulinitis,
near-total to total loss of endogenous insulin)].

The device weights 165 grams [slightly over 1/3rd
of a pound] and is 78 by 63 by 35 millimeters [3 by
2.5 by 1.4 inches], comparable with commercial
implantable devices yet overcoming the urgent cri-
tical issues related to reservoir refilling & powering.
