Authorities have arrested and charged a man in connection with a Minneapolis murder investigation, which went cold during the years the suspect is believed to have fled the United States, according to prosecutors.

Suleiman Abdulkadir Ali, 30, is charged in Hennepin County District Court with one count of second-degree murder in connection with the 2013 shooting death of 26-year-old Abdirahman Haji-Ahmed.

Abdulkadir Ali was living in Fargo, North Dakota at the time charges were filed last month.

Suleiman Abdulkadir Ali via Hennepin County Jail.

According to the criminal complaint, the shooting happened just before midnight on the night before Halloween at the intersection of Washington and 12th avenues south.

Haji-Ahmed was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds to his head in the driver's seat of a running vehicle.

Investigators determined the shots had been fired from the backseat.

According to the charge, investigators in 2013 learned Abdulkadir Ali had fled the state and likely gone to Somalia after the shooting, causing the case to go cold.

Homicide investigators in 2022 received a tip from a woman who said Abdulkadir Ali had called her the day of the murder to ask for money.

She said Abdulkadir Ali had admitted to shooting Haji-Ahmed and said he needed to leave the country because he'd been caught on camera at the gas station.

In March of this year, investigators learned Abdulkadir Ali had returned to the U.S.

Police obtained a search warrant for Abdulkadir Ali's DNA, which his out-of-state probation officer executed.

According to the charge, Abdulkadir Ali's DNA profile was compared to a torn jacket sleeve taken from the murder scene and was determined to be match.

The criminal charge against Abdulkadir Ali was originally filed under seal, with prosecutors noting he "represents an obvious flight risk."

Abdulkadir Ali was later arrested and booked into jail on May 1.
